SEATTLE — Ty France hit a two-run home run, six Seattle pitchers combined on a one-hitter and the Mariners beat the depleted Houston Astros 7-2 on Sunday. France followed Mitch Haniger’s two-run triple with a two-run home run to left field in the decisive four-run fifth inning to give the Mariners the series. Seattle has won four of five and has come from behind in six of 10 victories. Haniger and France, who bat first and second in the lineup, also had back-to-back RBI doubles in the seventh inning. France has reached base safely in 14 of 16 games. The loss was Houston’s seventh in its last eight games and comes with five players — including four starters — still on the injured list due to COVID-19 concerns. Seattle starter Nick Margevicius left in the top of the fifth with an undisclosed injury trailing 2-1 after giving up one hit and one unearned run while striking out three. LJay Newsome (1-0), Casey Sadler, Anthony Misiewicz, Rafael Montero and Drew Steckenrider combined for five innings of hitless relief. The Mariners bullpen is 6-1 with five saves in the last 11 games, giving up just six earned runs in 35 2/3 innings. Houston starter Jake Odorizzi (0-2) struck out seven and walked three in 4 1/3 innings. He gave up three hits but was pulled after Haniger’s fifth-inning triple made it 3-2. Aledmys Díaz had Houston’s only hit, an RBI double in the second inning. TRAINER’S ROOM Astros: Manager Dusty Baker said 2B Jose Altuve, DH Yordan Alvarez, 3B Alex Bregman, IF Robel Garcia and C Martin Maldonado have been cleared for individual workouts after sitting out since last Wednesday due to COVID-19 safety protocols. “Run, throw, hit, all baseball-related stuff,” Baker said. “It’s a little tough. I mean right now they have to work out individually, and so they’re kind of limited where they can work out and the facilities or whatever, so we’re trying to work through that now.” Mariners: Manager Scott Servais said two young prospects struggling with injuries won’t be back soon. LF Jake Fraley (hamstring) has yet to return to baseball activities after going on the 10-day injured list April 7. 2B Shed Long (shin) is playing in minor league spring training games but is not yet fully recovered from a stress fracture in his right shin and surgery to repair the injury. “I think the thing that’s bothered Shed is not so much getting up to running speed, but then slowing down and stopping and big-time change of direction is where he’s felt it,” Servais said. UP NEXT Astros: Houston is off Monday and Baker said he’s not yet sure whether Lance McCullers Jr. will make his scheduled start Tuesday at Colorado. McCullers had a bad reaction to his vaccine last week and has been having difficulty with his “equilibrium,” Baker said. Baker has two or three options in mind if McCullers can’t go but wouldn’t make them public. Mariners: LHP Justus Sheffield (0-1, 4.91) takes the mound when Seattle hosts the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. Sheffield has given up six earned runs and 11 hits in his two starts. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Chris Talbott, The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Salvador Perez tapped his bat twice on the plate to make sure it wasn't cracked, then sent the next pitch he saw from Toronto reliever T.J. Zeuch into the left-field fountains, breaking open a scoreless game and sending the Kansas City Royals to a 2-0 victory over the Blue Jays on Sunday. Brady Singer kept the Blue Jays off the board through six innings. Kyle Zimmer (1-0) and Josh Staumont each worked a perfect inning, and Greg Holland finished off the two-hitter for his second save of the season. Kansas City has won a major league-leading 55 consecutive games when ahead after seven innings. “Well, we can start by talking about Salvy again," Royals manager Mike Matheny said, "because he just continues to amaze us. Our fans love him and he keeps doing things to make them love him more. Just so fun to watch.” Perez’s two-run shot off Zeuch (0-2) in the seventh inning came one day after his two-out, walk-off homer gave the Royals a 3-2 win and split of their doubleheader. That homer soared an estimated 459 feet, the one Sunday a mere 441. Kansas City also won the opener Thursday night to take a series from Toronto for the first time since September 2017. “That shutout to me, just giving up a couple hits — there’s a lot of pride that catchers take,” said Matheny, himself a former backstop, “and I know Salvy takes a lot of pride in how that game unfolds. But they all did a terrific job.” The Royals won while leaving 13 on base, and the teams combined to go 1 for 18 with runners in scoring position. “We're just showing up and trying to do our best,” said Perez, whose banner week included a 4-for-4 performance against the Angels in which he had his 1,000th hit and a walk-off pickoff against Los Angeles the very next night. “It was a great week," Perez admitted with a smile, “and hopefully we can continue to do it.” Sunday's game was scoreless through six, but it wasn't so much a pitcher's duel as an exercise in offensive ineptitude. The Royals used a pair of walks each of the first two innings to load the bases against Robbie Ray, but each time he left them that way. They worked two more walks in the third and stranded those runners, and left runners standing on second base each of the next two innings to run their total to 10 through five. Singer must be wondering whether his teammates like him. The Royals did not score a single run with him on the mound in his first two starts, and they failed to again despite a solid job against the Blue Jays. Singer allowed just two hits and walked three while striking out six. At least he rendered the Blue Jays equally ineffective with runners on base. They left two aboard in the second, runners on the corners in the third and two more in the fourth, keeping the game scoreless even with busy base paths. “I feel good where we are as a team with all the injuries,” Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said. “Guys are playing now that weren't supposed to play, and that's how it goes. Maybe some guys are putting more pressure on themselves because now the lineup's not as strong as it used to be, but that's how it goes.” TRAINER'S ROOM Blue Jays RHP Jordan Romano (elbow) threw a side session and could return when his 10-day IL stint is up April 24, pitching coach Pete Walker said. RHP Tyler Chatwood (triceps) threw a bullpen session and will throw live batting practice Tuesday, and RHP Nate Pearson (groin) also will throw live BP early in the week. COVID CONCERNS Blue Jays OF Teoscar Hernandez, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, is no longer experiencing symptoms and could return April 23 against Tampa Bay. Toronto general manager Ross Atkins told MLB Network he's “ready for baseball” and the club is making sure “he's safe to enter our environment.” UP NEXT Blue Jays RHP Hyun Jin Ryu (1-1, 1.89) will make his fourth start of the season when Toronto plays the first of two games in Boston on Tuesday night. Royals LHP Danny Duffy (2-0, 0.75) will start the opener of a three-game set against Tampa Bay on Monday night needing six strikeouts to reach 1,000 and pass Tom Gordon for sixth most in club history. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Dave Skretta, The Associated Press

A woman who lost a sister and her family in last year's mass killing in Nova Scotia organized a walk in Cardiff, Alta. on Sunday to commemorate the tragedy. The five-kilometre walk, with participants attending in person or virtually, was done in partnership with the Nova Scotia Remembers Legacy Society, which is raising funds to establish a permanent memorial in Nova Scotia. A memorial race organized by the group was part of ceremonies on Sunday marking the one-year anniversary of the shooting rampage that claimed the lives of 22 people. "It was probably the longest, most excruciating day of my life," Crystal Mendiuk said of that day. She lost her sister Jolene Oliver, brother-in-law Aaron Tuck and niece Emily Tuck. Mendiuk organized Sunday's event to help honour their memory in the province where they spent so much of their lives. "My sister and my niece were born and raised in Alberta, my brother-in-law spent most of his life in Alberta," she said. "It is important for me that Albertans remember that even though this happened all the way in Nova Scotia, they were my family, they were Albertans. "And everybody in the country remembers, and I want for them to remember." Crystal Mendiuk (far left) was joined at the walk in Cardiff, Alta. by her mother Bonnie Oliver (centre-left), father John Oliver (centre-right), and sister Tammy Oliver-McCurdie (far right).(Manuel Carrillos Avalos/CBC) A year later, Mendiuk said she can now smile when she thinks of them. "The tears are a little less," she said. But there is still a long road ahead as many questions remain unanswered, Mendiuk added. "This didn't just affect me, my family. It didn't just affect all of the other families. It affected the country, it affected the world." The RCMP is under intense scrutiny over their handling of the case and why it took 13 hours for officers to stop the gunman. Bonnie Oliver, mother of Jolene Oliver and Mendiuk, said she hopes the public can get answers to ensure such a tragedy doesn't happen again. "A whole branch of our family tree went in one day, and we'll always remember them," she said. "But we'll never get them back." Bonnie Oliver said she would always remember her daughter Jolene as a "happy go lucky girl who loved life" and had a big heart. She said her 17-year-old granddaughter Emily Tuck was only just starting to bloom. "Three lives taken way too soon," she said. A memorial bench, plaque and tree have been set up by Sturgeon County in Cardiff Park.(Manuel Carrillos Avalos/CBC) Mendiuk said Sturgeon County obliged her request to plant a tree in Cardiff Park as a tribute to the lives lost. A bench and memorial plaque also mark the site. "There's a lot of people in this area that are from out east, there's a lot of people who knew somebody from out east," Mendiuk said. "So I wanted a place that everybody could come, everybody could see. You could sit on the bench, look out on the water and remember — remember them all."

Environmental activists have long rallied against India adding new coal-fired capacity.
