Funeral service, remembrance events for slain Selma Police officer will be open to the public

Those looking to pay their respects for fallen Selma Police Officer Gonzalo Carrasco Jr. will have two opportunities next week.

A public viewing and mass will be held for Carrasco at 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Church in Selma (2441 Dockery Ave.).

Then on Thursday morning, funeral services will be held starting at 10 a.m. at Selland Arena (700 M St.) in Fresno. There will be approximately 4,100 seats available to the general public on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Security screening will be conducted outside Selland Arena. Bags, backpacks and purses will not be allowed in the downtown venue.

Carrasco was killed on Jan. 31 while on patrol as he attempted to talk to a man in the front yard of a home, according to Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni.

The 24-year-old native of Reedley had been an officer for just 20 months and was a father-to-be.

A motorcade for Carrasco will be held before Thursday’s funeral service and afterward.

The first motorcade will start at approximately 7:30 a.m. with vehicles traveling south on Highway 99 from Belmont Avenue and exiting on Fresno Street before heading east then traveling south on M Street to get to Selland Arena.

After the funeral service, the motorcade will leave Selland around noon and head south on M Street, then north on Highway 41 before getting onto Highway 180. Then, vehicles will exit Reed Avenue to arrive at the Reedley Cemetery (2185 S. Reed Ave.).

Services at the cemetery will feature six law enforcement helicopters flying overhead.
