'Frozen' Stage Musical Will Unite Original Film's Songwriters, Screenwriter

It’s a freezing cold Friday in New York City, so it’s the perfect day for a big announcement from Disney about its upcoming Frozen stage musical.

The Mouse House has revealed that the theaterical version of its Oscar-winning film will bring together songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (they of “Let It Go” fame) and screenwriter and co-director Jennifer Lee, who will write the book for the new show (Lopez, an EGOT winner, also wrote the scores for Book of Mormon and Avenue Q).

The company didn’t offer up the name of a director — Alex Timbers of Peter and the Starcatcher reportedly consulted on the project, but is not yet formally attached — or a debut date.

This isn’t a reunion of the Frozen team so much as a continuation of their ongoing work, since they already came back together to make Frozen Fever, the new short film that will debut ahead of the live-action Cinderella in March.

The stage show is just one of many Frozen-focused initiatives from Disney, which is extending the life of the film with ice shows, theme park attractions, merchandise, and other tie-ins.

Disney has had great success with its stage productions, especially with the live adaptation of The Lion King, which in September hit a record-breaking $6.2 billion in ticket sales. The company also has Aladdin currently running on Broadway, while Newsies tours around the country.
