Heartbroken friends have paid tribute to 35-year-old aspiring lawyer, Zara Aleena, who was brutally attacked and killed in the early hours of Sunday morning in Ilford, east London. Police have described the tragic event as an "opportunistic attack by a stranger" and have arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

They have said no weapons appear to have been used in the attack, which took place on Cranbrook Road, leading to Gants Hill station.

Those in Zara's close circle have now spoken out [via the BBC] about the devastating loss. Friend Sophie described her as a 'positive' person to be around, "She was the nicest person you could ever meet, always positive. She lit up the whole room, she could talk to anyone for hours."

Another of Zara's friends told reporters that she declined a taxi home, instead saying she preferred to walk the two miles alone and that Zara was known to love walking, often choosing it over driving.

In a statement about the case, Chief Supt Stuart Bell said: "It is now believed that [Zara] was the victim of an opportunist stranger attack. Her family are aware of this and they will continue to be updated."

He continued on to add that Zara's death is an 'incredibly distressing incident' and that "women should not have to change their behaviour and should be able to go about their business feeling safe any time of day or night and it is our job to ensure that happens.

"Officers cannot be in all places at all times. We urge the community, especially women, to report any suspicious or unwanted behaviour or to seek help if you feel threatened."

Our thoughts are with all of Zara's loved ones at this awful time.
