“His name was Jason, and today is his birthday.”
On May 9, 1980, audiences were introduced to the terrifying world of Camp Crystal Lake in Friday the 13th. The first installment of the long-running series tells the story of a group of young camp counselors who are stalked by a mysterious killer, and eventually killed off one-by-one.
Initially made as a low budget film to cash in on the holiday-themed slasher movie craze of the late ‘70s, Sean S. Cunningham’s original horror classic, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, continues to stick around, much like the franchise’s main character: the indestructible undead serial killer, Jason Voorhees.
The series currently consists of 12 films (including a crossover with Freddy Kruger), a television series and a plethora of merchandise ranging from novels and comic books to video games and action figures. While the movies have varied in quality, each fulfills its promise of thrills and kills — the latter made possible by amazing makeup effects from wizards like Tom Savini and Stan Winston. In addition to the franchise’s memorable kills, audiences flock to fear and cheer on Jason, who has become a pop culture staple in his own right and an icon of the horror genre.
