Fresh Off ‘Road House,’ Amazon MGM Studios Signs First-Look Deal With Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories

Fresh off the release of “Road House,” Amazon MGM Studios has closed a three-year, first-look film deal with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories. Under the pact, Amazon MGM Studios will have first dibs on narrative features that the actor’s production company makes. The deal includes theatrical, as well as streaming releases.

Gyllenhaal most recently starred in “Road House,” a remake of the cult Patrick Swayze film, which was released on Amazon’s streaming service, Prime Video. The film debuted on March 21 and has reached over 50 million worldwide viewers on the service. Prior to that, Gyllenhaal starred in “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” which the studio released theatrically last year.

Gyllenhaal founded Nine Stories in 2015 with Riva Marker. Most recently, Nine Stories produced Antoine Fuqua’s “The Guilty,” which starred Gyllenhaal and debuted on Netflix. It also produced “Wildlife,” which marked Paul Dano’s directorial debut and starred Carey Mulligan; David Gordon Green’s “Stronger,” starring Gyllenhaal as Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman; and Antonio Campos’ Southern gothic, “The Devil All the Time.” Other releases include Reinaldo Marcus Green’s “Joe Bell” and Tate Taylor’s “Breaking News in Yuba County.” For the stage, Nine Stories produced “We’re Only Alive for a Short Amount of Time” by playwright David Cale, with Gyllenhaal serving as a producer on “Sea Wall/A Life” and Jeremy O. Harris’ “Slave Play.” Marker left the company to join Linden Entertainment in 2022.

Gyllenhaal’s acting credits include “Jarhead,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Prisoners” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” He is an Oscar and Tony Award nominee.

“Jake is a one-of-a-kind talent whose passion and eye for filmmaking makes him a powerful storyteller both in front of the camera and behind the scenes,” said Julie Rapaport, head of film production and development at Amazon MGM Studios. “Following the record-breaking success of ‘Road House,’ we could not imagine a better time to officially cement our relationship. Jake has been an incredible partner, and we look forward to collaborating with him and the Nine Stories team to create needle-moving and compelling films from visionary filmmakers.”

“I’ve worked with Amazon MGM on two films this past year, and they’ve been a wonderful partner both times,” said Gyllenhaal. “Their dedication to filmmaking is contagious, and I so admire their commitment to fans all over the world. I am thrilled to formalize what is an already fruitful collaboration — especially on the heels of ‘Road House’s’ outstanding debut.”
