Four homicide deaths in 12 hours: What we know about Sacramento’s current violence spree
A trio of fatal shootings bludgeoned Sacramento neighborhoods late Monday and early Tuesday, from the city’s north end to south of Broadway.
Here’s what information has been made available so far.
Death count at four
At least four people are dead and one more is injured after three separate shooting incidents.
Two people were found dead inside a car at around 11 p.m. Monday near San Juan Avenue and Azevedo Drive in South Natomas. Police found another person fatally shot around the same time at Eleanor Avenue and Arcade Boulevard in North Sacramento’s Strawberry Manor neighborhood.
About 12 hours later, Sacramento Police responded to a homicide scene at Sixth Avenue and 37th Street in Oak Park. At least one person was dead, but it was not immediately clear how many victims had been killed or when the shooting took place.
Elk Grove resident Alfonso Martinez Jr., 34, was also killed Sunday morning near the intersection of 28th and J streets in midtown Sacramento after an altercation outside the BarWest sports bar, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. A SWAT team arrested Michael Escobar, 23, in connection with the shooting on Monday in West Sacramento.
Suspect and victim information has not yet been released from the South Natomas, North Sacramento and Oak Park shootings.
Violent crime in Sacramento
Sacramento set grisly gun violence records last year, and 2022 has had its share of incidents as well.
Sacramento Police reported 57 homicides in 2021, more than any year since 2006. There have been 45 so far in 2022, according to Chief Kathy Lester, on pace to eclipse 2021’s high-water mark by year’s end.
That includes a wave of late-night shootings in the city’s midtown and downtown entertainment districts dating back well before Sunday morning outside BarWest. In fact, the deadliest shooting in city history left six people dead outside 10th and K streets on April 3 earlier this year.
