Formula 1 2020: Haas chief Guenther Steiner congratulates team for 'surviving' tough season

Manama: Haas team chief Guenther Steiner believes the American Formula One outfit's greatest achievement this season was the first and most important of all -- survival.

Speaking at a virtual news conference on Thursday ahead of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix, Steiner admitted that earlier this year, following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, team owner Gene Haas had considered pulling out of F1.

Asked to sum up Haas's season, Steiner said: "We survived. That's what we have done right.

"I think I'll leave it at that. I think there was a big chance that we are not here anymore, and I think everybody pulled together and we are here to stay.

"I think all-in-all, maybe we haven't been good at the track this year, but I think we have been good for the future of Haas F1 and also for F1€¦ I think F1 needs teams like Haas."

The Haas team was one of several 'smaller' F1 teams that faced a major struggle with the collapse of revenue. Of the others, former champions Williams decided to sell.

Haas, however, decided to fight on and have guaranteed their place on the grid in 2021 when, they hope, the team can re-set after an intense schedule and this season's battle for survival.

"We are having a tough season as a team €"- and it's a tough season for F1 in general," said Steiner.

"I'm not unhappy that it's ending soon. Everybody's a little bit tired. For sure a triple-header at the end is not what the guys want, and getting so close to Christmas as well.

"But we are still pretty lucky to have had a season at all. It's a blessing that it ends, but it's also a blessing that we had something to do this year."

He praised Formula One for creating a 17-race season out of the ashes of the original plans.

"It's amazing that they pulled this one off," he said.

"After Australia, it seemed this thing will be over pretty soon, but it wasn't. It kept running on and every day was a new day of bad news.

"So I think to pull off 17 races€¦ It's great that they got it done, but it's the same to be said about the teams that got it done -- all of the 10 teams."

Both Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean, who have collected just three points between them this season, are being released at the end of the campaign in a cost-cutting measure.

    ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A federal judge has ruled in favour of an online political writer who was prevented by Alaska's governor from attending press conferences. Judge Joshua Kindred issued an injunction Friday requiring Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy to invite Jeff Landfield to media briefings, Anchorage Daily News reported. Landfield, the owner and operator of The Alaska Landmine website, sued Dunleavy over his exclusion from the governor's press events. The former independent state Senate candidate uses the website to write about the Alaska Legislature, state government and politics. Attorneys from the Alaska Department of Law argued that because the governor’s office does not credential members of the media, and therefore does not set standards for press conference admittance, Landfield could not sue on First Amendment grounds because there was nothing to challenge. Kindred ruled Landfield had been denied due process, writing in the order that members of the media have the right under the First Amendment to be invited to press conferences. The governor may deny a member of the media the ability to ask questions while at a briefing and the governor can choose not to answer questions, Kindred ruled. Kindred concluded that a lack of written rules does not mean the governor’s office can make ad-hoc decisions about admittance. “Acceptance of the government’s arguments would effectively stand for the proposition that First Amendment rights do not exist for any members of the media in Alaska,” Kindred wrote. The injunction does not require Dunleavy or his communications staff to adopt a formal, written process. But they must invite Landfield to future events while legal proceedings continue, the ruling stated. The Associated Press

    WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court is declining to take up the case of former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who is serving a 6 1/2-year prison sentence after being convicted in a corruption case. The high court on Monday declined to take up the Democrat’s appeal. Once one of the three most powerful state officials, Silver was ousted as speaker in 2015 and was convicted later that year. His original conviction was overturned on appeal, but he was convicted again in 2018. Part of that conviction was then tossed out on another appeal, leading to yet another sentencing in July. Silver, who's 76, began serving his sentence in August. In the part of the case that survived the appeal process, Silver was convicted in a scheme that involved favours and business traded between two real estate developers and a law firm. Silver supported legislation that benefited the developers. The developers then referred certain tax business to a law firm that paid Silver fees. Two justices, Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas, said they would have heard Silver's case. The Associated Press
