Yahoo Movies Former Jets coach Adam Gase among those Seattle has interviewed for offensive coordinator job
Here are the rankings for Adam Gase’s offenses in yardage over the past six seasons, which covers three different franchises: 21st, 24th, 25th, 31st, 31st, 32nd.
The Seattle Seahawks have talked to Gase about running their offense.
Gase is among the list of coaches Seattle has talked to about the vacant offensive coordinator job, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Gase is available because he was fired by the New York Jets after two horrendous seasons as their head coach.
Gase has had two good seasons running an offense, and that came in 2013 and 2014 with the Denver Broncos. He had Peyton Manning at quarterback. Perhaps it was Manning who was most responsible for that offensive success.
Seahawks talk to Adam Gase
The Seahawks fired Brian Schottenheimer, whose scheme wasn’t exactly unlocking the best production from Seattle’s great quarterback Russell Wilson.
The Seahawks have talked to Gase and want to talk to Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka, whose team is still alive in the playoffs. Doug Pederson and Anthony Lynn have been mentioned as candidates too.
This hire is important for the Seahawks. Wilson is 32 years old and while he should still have many good years left, the Seahawks don’t want to waste any more of them. The issue becomes if coach Pete Carroll wants an offensive coordinator to use a run-heavy scheme that doesn’t feature Wilson, or if he’s interested in a candidate who can revamp Seattle’s offense and put Wilson in a position to have some great years before his play declines.
Either way, the inclusion of Gase on the candidate list is odd.
Seahawks have a big decision to make
Gase keeps living off those two seasons with Manning, and the recommendations Manning seemingly keeps giving him.
Since then, Gase is probably best known for bad offenses and failing to develop players. Many players have had their careers uptick after leaving Gase: Ryan Tannehill, Kenyan Drake, Robby Anderson, DeVante Parker among them. If you look at that, and the fact that Gase hasn’t had a top-20 offense since 2014, it’s confusing why Seattle would be interested.
Seattle will presumably take its time and have a lot of interviews before making a hire. It’s a big decision. And if the Seahawks settle on Gase, the reaction of their fans will not be a good one.
