Sara Ramirez has insisted that she has "absolutely" no regrets leaving Grey's Anatomy.

The actress played Dr Callie Torres for 10 years before she quit in 2016. Her decision to quit apparently caught creator Shonda Rhimes by surprise.

Ramirez described her decision to depart from the popular ABC medical drama as the right one.

"It has been a really full year and a half," she told Entertainment Weekly. "Taking a step back from the industry has allowed me to take space and get even more clear about things that are important to me.

"Coming out publicly was an organic decision and one that I spent a lot of energy and time making. It was incremental, not a spur-of-the-moment decision."

However, Ramirez refused to shut the door on a possible return in the future, revealing that Rhimes is also open to the possibility.

"When Shonda and I last spoke, we agreed to keep the conversations going, and she knows I'm open to keeping those conversations going," she explained.

Earlier this year, Ramirez criticised network ABC – which broadcasts Grey's Anatomy – for airing an offensive joke about bisexual people on sitcom The Real O'Neals.

She now stars in Madam Secretary as Kat Sandoval, a brilliant political strategist, legendary in DC for her talent and for abruptly dropping out of politics.

Grey's Anatomy recently aired its milestone 300th episode, paying tribute to original characters Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, and George O'Malley.

And it looks like the show will continue for a while yet.

Shonda claimed that Grey's Anatomy won't be ending until series star Ellen Pompeo wants to call it quits.

Grey's Anatomy returns to ABC on January 18.
