Former EastEnders star Maisie Smith addresses age gap concerns over relationship with Max George

Strictly Come Dancing alumni Maisie Smith has opened up about the age gap between herself and boyfriend Max George.

Former EastEnders actress Maisie is 21, whilst The Wanted singer Max is 34. Ever since they got together, almost two years after both competed in Strictly's 2020 series, there has been a lot of discussion and critique about that 13-year age difference.

Speaking to The Sun, Maisie brushed off any criticism, stating that: "If it wasn’t that, it would be something else.

"People don’t understand what goes on behind closed doors in a relationship, and I think they also forget that I’m a consenting 21-year-old woman who’s actually been working longer than Max!

"I don’t notice the age difference and neither do my friends or family. My mum Julia is the one who reads through all the comments. I got a message from her yesterday, saying: 'Just ignore them, you two were made for each other.'

"I think that just puts it into perspective. I really don’t care what a random person thinks of my relationship when everyone I do care about is incredibly supportive. I’ve been in the business long enough to know you have to have a thick skin."

She also joked that she constantly brings up how The Wanted's 'All Time Low' was one of two songs she was allowed to have on her phone when she was younger, and that she used to have a poster of the boyband on her wall.

Elsewhere in the interview, she talked about how the couple were happy being friends and didn't realise they had fallen for each other until a cast holiday in Portugal to celebrate the end of the Strictly 2022 tour last year.

"I wrote in my Valentine’s card this year ‘from strangers to friends, friends to lovers’, and I love the way that it happened for us," Maisie added.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
