Ford Maverick prototype spy photos reveal an independent rear suspension

Spy photos of the upcoming Ford Maverick compact pickup truck have revealed a fascinating development in the truck's design. Up until this point, the Maverick prototypes we've seen have featured a torsion beam rear suspension and front-wheel drive. This example very clearly has ditched that layout in favor of an independent setup. And while we don't see any all-wheel-drive components, this could conceivably be coupled with a differential and drive axles.

You can clearly see that instead of a a solid curved beam, this truck has individual lower control arms for the left and right rear wheels. They also feature coil springs, like the torsion beam variant, and separately mounted shocks. The subframe that they're bolted to seems high enough that a differential could be comfortably perched between the control arms. The rearrangement of the springs and shocks for this suspension may also grant clearance for axle shafts to rear the rear wheels. The control arms have somewhat odd-looking thin metal panels and brackets clamped around them. They look like they might be early prototype pieces, possibly a stand-in spring perch design while final arms are still being designed.

It has previously been speculated that the Maverick could be related to the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport, and perhaps some of it is, but this rear suspension setup looks distinctly different from at least the Bronco Sport, as shown in the comparison shot above. It has much more curved lower control arms. Not only that, but neither crossover features a torsion beam rear end like the earlier Mavericks featured.

We suspect that when the Maverick goes on sale, both the torsion beam and independent suspension systems will be implemented. The front-wheel-drive models will probably get the more affordable torsion beam design while all-wheel-drive versions will get the independent setup. Based on leaked images, it seems development of the Maverick is fairly far along, but it's hard to say when it will be revealed.

"There is an ongoing investigation and Boxing Canada has immediately taken necessary actions to protect everyone, including an interruption of all activities, preventive isolation and further testing," the organization said. "The collective health, well-being and safety of all our members remains our top priority and the measures are in place to mitigate the risks associated with COVID-19." Bujold said the positive test "could have happened to any one of us." The worst part, she added, was being unable to see her husband Reid or daughter Kate Olympia. It's the latest setback for Bujold and her Canadian teammates, who have yet to clinch spots in the Tokyo Olympics. The continental qualifiers, scrapped last year due to the global pandemic, have finally been rescheduled to May 10-16 in Argentina. But being forced to isolate makes training difficult. Bujold, a two-time Pan American Games champion, hopes to be the first female to box for Canada at consecutive Olympics. An illness derailed Bujold's dreams at the 2016 Rio Games. Pittman says Sund’s phone records show he called former House Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving at 12:58 p.m. to request the Guard, then called ex-Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Stenger at 1:05 p.m. Pittman says Sund made at least four more calls in the next 40 minutes.
