Florida man arrested after falling through ceiling and robbing Chico gas station

A Florida man was arrested in Chico on Thursday, one week after he allegedly fell through the ceiling of a local gas station and burgled the business inside.

At around 3 a.m. on Aug. 4, a man entered the Valero Gas Station at 2233 Esplanade by falling through the roof of the establishment. The suspect stole several items before fleeing, according to a Thursday news release from the Chico Police Department.

While reviewing surveillance of the incident, Officer Cory Barrow of the Chico Police Department noticed the subject was wearing “distinct clothing,” according to the police.

On Aug. 11, Chico Police Officer Derek Ament was investigating an unrelated call for service in the 2300 block of the Esplanade and made contact with a man wearing similar clothing to the suspect in the surveillance footage.

According to the release, Barrow used video surveillance footage and “other incriminating evidence” to identify the man — Joseph Martin, 28 — as the burglary suspect. After a short interview, Martin was arrested for commercial burglary and booked in the Butte County Jail on Thursday evening.
