Florence Pugh has revealed the reason she shaved her head for her role in new movie We Live in Time.

The Dune 2 and Oppenheimer actor stars alongside Andrew Garfield in the decades-spanning, romantic drama that charts the couple's love beginnings and life together.

Last May, Pugh appeared at the Met Gala debuting a new shaved head transformation which, unbeknownst at the time, was due to her latest role.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Pugh set the record straight on why she shaved her hair off.

"I think there was this weird rumour on the internet saying that I did it to take back my identity, which is something I’ve never said in my entire life," she says, addressing the reaction to her look at the Met Gala.

However, the real reason for her hair change came about during early conversations with We Live in Time's director John Crowley who suggested Pugh wore a wig in place of having to shave her hair.

"I just stopped him mid-sentence and I was like, 'John, no one can play a character like this in a movie like this and not do the thing that is needed to be done,'" she continues. "And if you don’t want to do it, I believe that you shouldn’t be doing a story like this."

Pugh plays Almut in the movie, who after the early years of courtship receives a tragic diagnosis that tests her bond with partner Tobias (Garfield).

We Live in Time is directed by The Goldfinch and Brooklyn's John Crowley, based on a script by Olivier Award-winning playwright Nick Payne. Benedict Cumberbatch is also on board as an executive producer.

The movie's world premiere takes place tonight (September 6) at the Toronto International Film Festival, but UK film fans will have to wait for New Year's Day in 2025 when it is released in UK cinemas.

We Live in Time will be released in the UK on January 1, 2025.
