Flames from the wind-whipped Colorado Fire burned right up to the iconic Bixby Bridge on Highway 1 on Saturday.
Bay Area News Group photographer Karl Mondon snapped a dramatic photo of the blaze Saturday morning, showing flames spreading behind the famous bridge as dawn broke.
Photos provided by Cal Fire showed the fire had burned most of a hillside beside the bridge.
As of Sunday morning, the fire stood at 1,050 acres and was 25% contained, according to Cal Fire.
It started at 7:17 p.m. Friday on Palo Colorado Canyon Road in Big Sur and led to evacuations and a closure of Highway 1.

The rallies were spurred by a wave of violence against women that the government says has seen a woman killed every four days this year. The rallies also followed a mass stabbing in Sydney this month that killed six people, including five women.

The mission of transporting the Olympic flame on the first leg of its journey to the opening ceremony in Paris was given to one of the France’s most venerable sailing ships, the Belem, built in 1896. Between April 26 and May 8, the ship will sail the Mediterranean to bring the flame from Greece to Marseille, the start of the Olympic torch relay on French soil. It’s fair to say that the task of conveying the flame to France is only the latest of the ship’s adventures over the past 128 years.
