Yahoo Movies Five Nights at Freddy's sets new box office record
Five Nights at Freddy's has set a new record at the US box office.
The film adaptation of the video game series follows security guard Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), who takes a night-time gig looking after the derelict Freddy Fazbear's Pizza restaurant. After his first shift, though, Mike realises the new job might be more trouble than it's worth, as he comes into contact with various villains.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Five Nights at Freddy's has performed well with audiences. Variety reports that it's now the highest-grossing horror film of the year in the US after earning $113.6 million.

As of this writing, the film's worldwide gross stands at $217.1 million. Depending on how future weeks at the box office go, Five Nights at Freddy's could also become this year's top-grossing horror movie worldwide. It just has to outperform The Nun II, which has grossed nearly $266 million globally.
Five Nights at Freddy's has received some criticism for its lighter take on the genre, with the film being rated PG-13 in the US. Director Emma Tammi defended the rating, explaining that the intention was to appeal to a wide audience.
"It felt like it was important and really exciting to be able to include a younger audience to come see this movie," she said.

"But we also, of course, wanted to deliver on the scares and at least the implied violence of a kill, even if you don't see everything."
She added: "I personally find it sometimes more fun and creative to figure out the way to show the thing without explicitly showing the thing or without graphically showing the thing. It lets your mind go to even darker places sometimes than when you show all the gore in the guts."
Five Nights at Freddy's is in cinemas now.
