It may not have been the most anticipated game of Week 10, but the Jacksonville Jaguars hosting the Los Angeles Chargers turned out to be one of the craziest games of the season. The final result was a 20-17 Jags overtime win.
Here are the six craziest moments of a game that had plenty of wild moments.
1. Chargers’ Austin Ekeler late-game fumble
With the Chargers nursing a 17-14 win and merely needing to run the clock out, reserve running back Austin Ekeler fumbled with 1:51 remaining in the game, an unbelievable break for the Jaguars. And then …
2. Fumble return for touchdown overturned
It looked like Jaguars safety Tashaun Gipson returned Ekeler’s fumble for a go-ahead score. That was the call on the field. However, after a review Gipson was correctly ruled down.
3. Marqise Lee taunting penalty
After Gipson’s recovery the Jaguars still had a chance to tie with a field goal or win with a touchdown. But Lee was tagged for a dead-ball, 15-yard taunting penalty with the Jags driving. After Lee was hit hard in the end zone as he unsuccessfully tried to corral a touchdown pass from Blake Bortles, he proceeded to dance and taunt the Chargers defense, presumably assuming he just drew a penalty himself due to a Chargers late hit. It’s one of the stranger penalties you will ever see, and it knocked the Jaguars out of field-goal range. Blake Bortles threw a desperate interception right after that. And yet, the game still wasn’t over.
4. Joey Bosa’s awful roughing the passer
Bosa is an infinitely talented player who became the second youngest player in NFL history — behind only Terrell Suggs — to reach 20 career sacks. But his bonehead 15-yard penalty, after the Jaguars forced a three-and-out and a punt, was a reminder that he is still just 22 years old. With Bortles desperately trying to get his team in field-goal range to force overtime, Bosa inexplicably threw him down way after the incomplete pass. That gave the Jaguars enough yardage to kick a game-tying field goal to force overtime.
5. Jags fake punt for a touchdown
The crazy moments didn’t all come in the final few minutes of regulation. With the first quarter coming to a close, the Jags faced a fourth down in their own territory. Head coach Doug Marrone dialed up the perfect fake punt call, a direct snap to wide receiver Corey Grant that went 59 yards for the score. Grant also had a long run on a fake punt earlier this season against Baltimore.
6. Josh Lambo’s partially blocked field goal wins game
The game-winning field-goal was set up by a fantastic interception and long return by Jaguars cornerback A.J. Bouye. It’s fitting that former Chargers kicker Lambo won the game, but it didn’t come easy. His 30-yard field goal attempt was partially blocked but still somehow snuck through the uprights. Because a game as weird as this one couldn’t end without one more strange moment.
