OPINION - From Greenland to Gaza, Donald Trump’s bullying pressure campaign is working
Make America Great Again (MAGA) was Ronald Reagan’s slogan before it was made “great” again by Donald Trump. Trump is hellbent on asserting the Trump doctrine, whereby might is right and slogans like MAGA and America First represent the exercise of raw power. Can the US Treasury market withstand the next financial crisis?
While the total value of the US Treasury market (^TYX, ^TNX, ^FVX) equals $28.3 trillion, could it withstand another financial crisis? Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler sits down with Yahoo Finance senior reporter Jennifer Schonberger for an extensive interview, where he forecasts the Treasury market to grow by an addition $7 to 8 trillion over the next four years. "A number of the policies being debated right now also... directionally put pressure, upward pressure on inflation, whether it's tax policy, tariff policy, immigration policy," Gensler outlines. "So I think that's why it's so critical, the reforms that we did in a bipartisan way, working with [Federal Reserve Chair] Jay Powell and [US Treasury Secretary] Janet Yellen's Treasury and the Federal Reserve, that they get implemented over these next 18 months to kind of lower the risk in this Treasury market." Gensler believes the Treasury market's "fragility" could stem hedge funds' own leverage borrowing or geopolitical economic shocks affecting those firms. Catch Jennifer Schonberger's full interview with outgoing SEC Chair Gary Gensler, where they discuss his tenure at the regulatory agency and the future of cryptocurrency regulation. Biden's big semiconductor law will ramp up US chip production -- but at a high cost, report finds
Researchers at the Peterson Institute for International Economics calculated that the $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act will create about 93,000 construction jobs as chip factories go up in the United States and 43,000 permanent jobs once they’re in operation. But the government subsidies behind the expected chip manufacturing boom mean that each job created will cost taxpayers about $185,000 a year – twice the average annual salary of U.S. semiconductor employees, the Peterson report found.

German prosecutor charges Syrian with war crimes against Yazidis
A high-ranking member of the Islamic State militant group in Syria has been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Germany, partly for alleged involvement in the genocide against the Yazidi community, prosecutors said. The suspect, a Syrian national identified as Ossama A. in line with German privacy law, joined Islamic State (IS) in the summer of 2014 in the Deir ez-Zor region of eastern Syria, the German prosecutor-general's office said in a statement. Two of the buildings were used by IS to imprison captured Yazidi women so that fighters could sexually abuse and exploit them, according to Wednesday's statement, which listed aiding and abetting genocide among the charges against Ossama A.

France's PM Bayrou weakened by Socialists' threat to back no-confidence vote
PARIS (Reuters) -The prospects of French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou's minority government surviving in the long term appeared slimmer after the Socialist Party raised the threat of backing a no-confidence vote on Thursday. Although Bayrou looks likely to survive the no-confidence motion put forward by 58 far-left France Unbowed (LFI), Green and communist MPs, a loss of Socialist support would be a big blow, especially after he offered on Tuesday to renegotiate a disputed 2023 pension reform law to win their backing. If he were to lose the Socialists' support, Bayrou would find himself in a similar position to his predecessor Michel Barnier: reliant on the grace of the far-right National Rally (RN), which could pull its support at will.
