Written and directed by Christos Nikou, this upcoming sci-fi romance premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last month and takes viewers to a near-future where romantic chemistry is determined by a controversial piece of technology.
Played by Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter), Anna is paired up with Ryan (White) and despite their 'proven' connection, she's still unsure. After taking a job at the love-testing institute, Anna shadows instructor Amir (The Night Of star Riz Ahmed) and everything becomes clear.
Judging by the trailer, which is soundtracked by Yazoo tune 'Only You', Anna and Ryan are not quite the perfect match.
"I founded this institute to take the risk out of love," states Luke Wilson's company boss Duncan to his employees. "No more uncertainty, no more wondering if you've chosen the right partner, no more divorce.
"We were the first to build the machines to conduct the test, to make the bond of love stronger."
Variety wrote: "A love story hinging on human chemistry as a disruptive force would fall to pieces if its stars didn't have that very unquantifiable quiver of static between them.
"But Buckley and Ahmed play off each other exquisitely, gradually reflecting each other in motion and mien, each looking at the other with the kind of facially centred full-body want that no amount of dialogue can convey on its own.
"[Cinematographer Marcell] Rév's camera gazes at them with equal intent and intensity, capturing each character’s wordless private epiphanies in gorgeous, cradling closeup."
Fingernails hits cinemas for a limited time on October 27, before streaming on Apple TV+ from November 3.
