Yahoo Movies First look at Mortal Kombat lands as "really brutal" movie is teased
Mortal Kombat's previous ventures out of video gaming and into live-action movies have been... let's just say they were released and leave it at that.
But when Warner Bros announced a big-budget version with a decent cast and The Conjuring and Aquaman's James Wan serving as producer, we were cautiously optimistic.
But now the first-look batch of images have been released, and we are definitely sliding more towards the 'optimistic' end of the scale.
The images feature the new interpretations of characters like Sonya Blade, Jaxx and Liu Kang, played by Home and Away's Jessica McNamee, Supergirl's Mehcad Brooks and Power Rangers' Ludi Lin, respectively.

There's also a new character thrown into the mix, Cole Young, played by Iron Fist's Lewis Tan. He's got the franchise' logo as a birthmark on his chest and doesn't know why, but it's why Sub-Zero is after him.
Yup, the franchise's iconic ninja is a big part of the movie too. Played by The Raid's Joe Taslim, the film will actually start with a flashback fight scene focusing on him and fellow ninja Scorpion, played by Avengers: Endgame and The Last Samurai's Hiroyuki Sanada.

Director Simon McQuoid has stated the film will be a bloody affair rather than a watered down film, telling Entertainment Weekly that: "We needed it to be really elemental and really brutal. It's not a shiny film… I wanted the dirt and the grime to come through."
Mortal Kombat will be released in US theatres on April 16, 2021, and will also stream on HBO Max as part of the studio's controversial release plan for this year. A UK release date has not been revealed yet.
