First lady Jill Biden to stop at Tacoma college during West Coast swing this week

First lady Jill Biden will visit Tacoma on Friday for an event at Bates Technical College, according to the White House. The first lady also will go to Seattle and is expected to speak at an event for U.S. Sen. Patty Murray.

After attending events in San Francisco, Biden will arrive in Western Washington about 3:15 p.m. Friday at King County International Airport, according to a schedule released Tuesday. None of the events are open to the public.

Biden will be at Bates Technical College later that afternoon to spotlight the college’s workforce development programs. The White House described the programs as leading examples of community college and technical career pipelines to connect high school students to opportunities.

On Saturday, Biden will deliver remarks at a local fund-raising event for Murray about noon. Afterward, she will go to the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, where she is hosting an event to celebrate the children of military and veteran care-giving families. With Biden will be the secretary for the Department of Veteran Affairs, Denis McDonough and Murray, who is running for re-election against Republican challenger Tiffany Smiley.

Biden came to Pierce County last year, touring Joint Base Lewis-McChord with Gov. Jay Inslee and the base’s I Corps commander.
