First Dates waitress Laura Tott has explained why she's not in the new series.

The Channel 4 dating show will return to screens tonight (January 19) for its sixteenth season, and this time around Fred Sirieix and his team will be matching up singletons in a restaurant in Manchester, rather than London.

Noticeably absent from the team this time around will be Laura Tott, and posting to Instagram on Friday (January 15), the waitress explained why she won't appear in the Manchester episodes.

In the post, Laura explained that the production team wanted "some new local faces among the old faces", and she also added that her day job as an NHS paramedic would have made it difficult to fit filming for the series into her schedule during coronavirus pandemic times anyway.

"As you can see, I do not appear in this new series of First Dates," Laura wrote.

"They have moved up north to a new restaurant and wanted to freshen up the team for this series with some new local faces among the old faces, so I will not be featuring in this new series of First Dates unfortunately.

"To be honest, I don't actually know how I would have fit filming in this year with working during the pandemic, I've needed every day off to chill out so it's actually been a welcome break. I've missed the whole team though, that's for sure."

While disappointed to not be involved in this series, Laura did reassure fans she'll "be back again real soon", and also wished luck to the show's new servers.

She added: "This doesn't mean it's over and I'm still very much part of the First Dates family and hopefully, I'll be back again real soon.

"Can't wait to watch the new series. Good luck to the new waiters/waitresses this series."

First Dates returns to Channel 4 tonight (January 19) at 10pm.
