Finding Dory Is Tracking Insane Box Office Numbers

‘Finding Dory’ is on course to beat ‘Toy Story 3’s’ opening weekend haul for a Pixar film, according to box office experts.

The current projections, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, for the hugely anticipated ‘Finding Nemo’ sequel is that it could make as much as $120 million, which will see it easily swim past the $110.3 million made by ‘Toy Story 3′ back in 2010.

‘Finding Dory’ has its sights on a bigger catch, though. The highest amount ever grossed by an animated film is 2007’s ‘Shrek The Third’, which amassed $121.6 million, an amount ‘Minions’ just fell short of last year when it took $115.7 million.

While UK audiences have to wait all the way until July 29 to see ‘Finding Dory’, it’s getting a rather substantial release in other territories this weekend, including the increasingly influential China.

‘Finding Dory’s’ triumph will be a welcome relief to Pixar, who suffered a rare flop back in November when ‘The Good Dinosaur’ only managed to amass a $39 million opening, before ultimately clocking out at just $331 million, the lowest ever gross for the studio.

Last summer was a very different story, though, as buoyed by a hugely impressive critical response ‘Inside Out’ made $90 million in its first few days, despite opening just a week after the surprising colossus that was ‘Jurassic World’, before raking up $857.4 million worldwide to become the third highest gross for the studio.

While ‘Finding Dory’ looks set to battle ‘Toy Story’ for the number 1 position, it’s also on course to move past Finding Nemo, which, even though it was released back in 2003, is still Pixar’s second highest grossing film with $895 million.

‘Finding Dory’s’ reviews, while impressive, haven’t been as overwhelmingly stellar as its predecessor, but that shouldn’t stop it taking in a huge amount over the next few weeks. Unfortunately, UK viewers still have a few weeks left to wait to find out what all the fuss is about, though.
