Film History 101: Jennifer Tilly reminds us that 'Bride of Chucky,' not 'Team America,' pioneered doll sex in movies

The legacy of South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s 2004 all-puppet comedy Team America: World Police includes the film’s infamously steamy sex scene between a pair of patriotic dolls, a sequence generally regarded as unprecedented.

But the precedent had already been set, thank you very much, according to Queen of the Chucky-verse Jennifer Tilly.

“We were the first [people] to do a doll sex scene,” Tilly told Yahoo Entertainment in a Facebook Live interview Monday (watch above). “I hate to say it. Everyone’s like, ‘Oooh, South Park!’ Team America.’ They did that after us.”

Tilly is referring to 1998’s Bride of Chucky, which paired Brad Dourif’s homicidal “Good Guy” doll with her equally bloodthirsty villainess, Tiffany.

The sequel, which was the fourth film in the Child’s Play saga, explored another hot-button topic: unprotected doll sex. When asked if he’s wearing a condom, Chucky emphatically tells his new mate: “Tiff, look at me, I’m all rubber!”

“This is a lesson for the kiddies. Unprotected sex leads to unplanned pregnancies,” Tilly chuckled. “There would’ve been no Seed of Chucky if he had listened to Tiffany.”

Cult of Chucky, the seventh installment in the Chucky series, hits Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on Oct. 3. Watch the trailer:
