Fayette schools cancel in-person learning Tuesday due to icy roads; will have NTI day

Fayette County and several other central and Eastern Kentucky school districts canceled in-person classes Tuesday due to icy and slick conditions.

Fayette County Public Schools will have a non-traditional instruction day — students will learn from home.

Decisions about after-school and evening activities will be made as soon as possible, district officials said in a statement about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“Decisions will be communicated at the individual campus level,” the statement said.

Woodford, Scott, Clark, Jessamine, Madison and Franklin counties are among the other school districts that canceled in-person classes.

Lexington Catholic High School was also having an NTI day, that school’s website said.

At least 38 school districts or private schools across Kentucky had canceled in-person classes by 4 a.m., some opting for non-traditional instruction days in which students learn from home.

On Monday night before Fayette County Public Schools officials announced its closing, school board chairman Tyler Murphy used a little humor on social media to remind students that school board members do not make snow day decisions.

“We leave that up to folks far more capable than us (looking at you, Physical Plant and Operations crew),” Murphy said in a Facebook post. “So you can wear those PJs inside out, flush ice cubes down the toilet, perform a snow dance, or whatever ritual you believe will summon a snow day—there’s not much more I can do for you in that department.”

It’s the second day in the past week that Fayette County schools won’t have in-person classes. The district had its first snow day of the year on Friday after snow showers caused slick conditions on Lexington’s roads.
