Famed Paul Bunyan Statue in Minnesota Damaged by Nighttime Climbers

The iconic Paul Bunyan statue in Bemidji, Minnesota, was damaged in an incident on May 3 involving “several people climbing and hanging off of Paul’s arm and the adjacent sign,” police said in a statement on May 7.

The Mayor of Bemidji, Jorge Prince, said the damage was sustained on May 3.

The arm was secured and “is currently being held in place by rebar that runs throughout Paul,” according to police. Access to the area surrounding the statue was limited to “ensure the safety of Paul and the public,” they added.

The 18-foot-tall statue has stood in the city since 1937, according to officials.
