The end of summer is always a bummer, but the upside is we now look to the best season for dressing on the horizon—fall. It’s hard to feel any elegance when you’re wearing the bare minimum shorts and tee or when you’re so bundled up you can’t put your arms down, but we are approaching that perfect in-between sweet spot. Cooler temps roll in and we can reach for our favorite layers or try something new.

There’s a lot more where this came from. Sign up for our weekly newsletter to get all our reviews, expert advice, deals and more.

This year, we’re looking at the best men’s fall jackets that are available to shop at some of our favorite retailers, like Amazon, Nike and Patagonia. We looked for durability, style, comfort and price, trying to find that sweet spot between chic and long-lasting.

Here are the best men’s jackets we found for fall 2022.

1. Levi’s Trucker Jacket

Levi’s originated the classic design in 1967, and it still looks great
Levi’s originated the classic design in 1967, and it still looks great

It can’t be overstated how important a classic denim jacket is in a guy’s closet. The basic cut has been around since the early 1900s, but the most revered silhouette—double button-flap chest pockets, adjustment tabs at the hem, button closure—came from Levi’s in 1967 and has continued to be a staple ever since.

This denim Levi’s jacket is composed of 100% cotton non-stretch denim. The brand suggests you take your normal size for a glove-like fit, or size up one if you’d rather layer a hoodie or sweater underneath. Denim jackets are known for their durability, and if you opt for one in a dark wash, it’ll fade over time—but try not to wash it more than you need to.

2. Dickie’s Men’s Snap Front-Nylon Jacket

We love Dickie’s take on the utilitarian coach’s jacket.
We love Dickie’s take on the utilitarian coach’s jacket.

The surge of the workwear trend has people clamoring for Dickies 874 pants, but the heritage brand also makes rugged outerwear like this coach’s jacket. The classic design details include a front button placket, elasticized wrist cuffs and a drawstring hem to keep out the cold and rain. The nylon shell is coated for added water resistance, and a flannel-like lining adds warmth without adding bulk.

Reviewers noted how well made this jacket feels and were surprised by the quality construction for such an affordable price. They also noted details like handwarmer pockets, which are deep and secure belongings well. As with a lot of outerwear, sizing depends on how you want to wear it, but a lot of reviewers say this jacket is cut generously so you’ll most likely have the option to layer whatever you want underneath.

3. London Fog Zip-up Golf Jacket

This London Fog golf jacket is more versatile than you think.
This London Fog golf jacket is more versatile than you think.

A golf jacket is kind of the quintessential “old man” jacket—in the best way possible—but can be so much more than that depending on how you wear it. I have one from my grandpa I often wear because of its versatility—think James Dean’s iconic Rebel Without a Cause red jacket, Walter White in Breaking Bad, and Bill Murray somewhere right now probably.

This style from London Fog hits on that timeless design with a classic fit that is generously cut, and comes in 16 colors so you can go as loud or subdued as you want. The polyester/nylon blend shell is water resistant enough to keep you dry in a short downpour, and the button cuffs and elasticized hem help to keep wind and chill out. It’s fully lined in a tonal mesh and has three interior pockets including a small, lower pocket.

Another detail is the bi-swing back, which means it’s constructed with gusseted panels at the shoulder allowing for a wider range of motion that helps mobility and comfort. This jacket holds up well in the wash after years and years, is easily packable , and is just an overall good jacket to have on hand come fall.

4. Patagonia Retro-X Fleece

A cozy fleece from an original outdoors outfitter.

If you want something a little more cozy, high-pile fleece will keep you warm and make you feel like Snuggles the Bear. Patagonia has been the longtime outfitter of adventurers and outdoorsmen, but their Retro-X fleece became wildly popular with just about everybody and is now a staple of its fall/winter line-up in different colors each year. The shell is a high-pile sherpa fleece made from recycled polyester, the lining is a moisture-wicking knit mesh, and in between there is a breathable windproof barrier to cut cold and wind. There is a zippered chest pocket and hand warmer pockets at the hips.

If you’re between sizes, buy one size up. Some reviewers say these can run small and many people prefer a fleece to have a more generous fit. As great as these are, they don’t do well in the rain as the fleece is somewhat absorbent so opt for another option on rainy days—I once got caught in the rain riding my bike in Portland and can speak from personal experience of feeling like a sponge on wheels. It’s worth noting Patagonia is one of the few brands that adheres to their conservation ideals through donations, repair services and buyback programs.

5. Levi’s Cord Sherpa Trucker Jacket

Levi’s makes their trucker in a fall ready corduroy.
Levi’s makes their trucker in a fall ready corduroy.

Corduroy in warm hues screams fall, so if you want a trucker jacket that’s as autumnal as it gets, then this is your best bet. The Levi’s Cord Trucker Jacket updates the iconic original design and switches up the fabric and lining for a more seasonal option. The double chest pockets are slightly bigger, and the double front closure has both a zipper and snap buttons to keep you warm; elastic cuffs and the sherpa lining also add protection against the cold.

Like denim, the thin-wale corduroy is 100% cotton and keeps the shell of the jacket relatively lightweight while the sherpa keeps you insulated, but unlike the OG trucker, this jacket won’t fit like a glove and will do better as your top layer. It is machine washable and will be fine if you opt to use the dryer instead of hanging.

6. Nike Sportswear Windrunner Jacket

A retro windbreaker that is good for sport and style.
A retro windbreaker that is good for sport and style.

This sporty windbreaker is the perfect light layer for fall: it’s stylish enough to be worn casually but also delivers if you’re using it for the gym or running. It’s based on an original Nike design and updated with a lightweight recycled polyester shell and mesh lining; the rib knit cuffs and hem keep the wind out but a vented panel on the upper back makes it breathable. The hood can be cinched down using the drawcords and the zippered pockets keep belongings secured if you’re using it for a run or a bike ride.

The chevron color block design is a retro throwback but is also available in solid colors. It’s super portable since it’s so lightweight. I've had one for about four years now and take it on most trips because it takes up very little space and is a nice lightweight option for everything from hiking, to runs, to walking around a city. Washing has been no hassle as well; I don’t have to worry about special instruction and can wash and dry it on regular cycles. This jacket runs true to size so take your normal size.

7. Carhartt Duck Chore Jacket

A workwear classic that will hold up for years.
A workwear classic that will hold up for years.

The Detroit jacket is probably one of the better known Carhartt styles, but the workwear brand also makes a great chore coat. This jacket is constructed of 12-oz duck canvas with a contrast corduroy collar, blanket lined body, and quilted lined sleeves for extra warmth; the chore coat silhouette is longer in the body and ends past your hips so it’s a good option if you’re on the taller side or just want extra coverage.

The pockets and buttons are all riveted with brass hardware adding durability and reinforcement to the stitched seams—not to mention it adds to the workwear look all together. Carhartt is known for running on the larger side so if you plan to mostly wear it with a tee or button up you should size down a whole size for a closer fit.

8. Baracuta G9 Jacket

Steve McQueen’s favorite jacket that you’ll also like.
Steve McQueen’s favorite jacket that you’ll also like.

This jacket is one of the most iconic of all time, best known as a favorite of the indisputably cool Steve McQueen. The Baracuta G9 is the Harrington style jacket that toes the line between casual and polished with the elegance only a U.K. heritage brand can achieve. The cotton/poly shell is water resistant, and the tartan patterned lining is a trademark of Baracuta made of patented COOLMAX polyester that is breathable, moisture-wicking and keeps you comfortable.

The “umbrella” yoke at the back helps rain roll off, and the double zipper allows you to unzip from top or bottom making it more comfortable if you’re sitting or riding a bike around. The rib knit cuffs and hem, and two-button tab collar sporty details on an otherwise preppy silhouette make it more versatile. I’ve had a navy G9 for eight years now and it has held up well in the wash, but I’d advise you hang dry. It’s one of those jackets I reach for come fall that covers a lot of bases performance-wise, while also going with most of my wardrobe for any occasion.

9. Barbour Bedale Jacket

Barbour’s best-selling Bedale is as stylish as it is durable.
Barbour’s best-selling Bedale is as stylish as it is durable.

Another classic U.K. brand that has been making great outerwear for years is Barbour. The Bedale jacket is one of its best-selling pieces that has been coveted by equestrians, the Royal Family, and preppy New Englanders since it first appeared in 1980. Composed of 6-oz waxed canvas, the Bedale jacket was created as a midweight option from Barbour that could be worn year-round in England. It’s a little warmer here across the pond, so it’s better suited for the colder days of fall.

Waxed canvas is highly durable, weather resistant and insulating; like raw denim or leather, waxed canvas wears in over time and gets better with age, lightening up at points of movement and taking on unique wear patterns from use. You can always re-wax your jacket to maintain water resistance, but you won’t need to do so for a couple of years.

With a longer length in the body and the contrast cord collar, it has a similar silhouette to Carhartt’s chore coat; two bellow pockets at the front and two hand warmer moleskin lined pockets at the waist give you a lot of storage options. The signature “stormy-fly” front has both a zipper and button placket making it extremely weatherproof, and the collar conceals a throat tab underneath that can be buttoned across for extra warmth.

I’ve had a Bedale for about 10 years now and it's one of those pieces I know I’ll have forever—and then pass down—as they’re so well made and worth the money. You can even send it back to Barbour to be re-waxed when the time comes, though after a decade or so I haven’t needed to. It’s best to spot-clean with a sponge; I use a shoeshine brush to get off any dirt or debris from time to time.

10. Huckberry Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket

Huckberry’s modern waxed trucker is the brand’s most popular jacket.
Huckberry’s modern waxed trucker is the brand’s most popular jacket.

Huckberry’s in-house brand created a trucker jacket using waxed canvas in a modern design. This waxed trucker is a mix of the traditional trucker jacket and Barbour’s Bedale jacket and will cover a lot of bases when it comes to what you want out of outerwear.

The waxed trucker also has a polyester blanket lining for added warmth in a striped pattern similar to a Pendleton camp blanket. A lot of times waxed jackets can feel a bit rigid but this one is soft out of the box and requires very little break-in—after about a day of wear, mine softened up and didn’t feel stiff. As with a denim jacket, these are cut tailored so if you want to layer underneath, consider sizing up one.
