Falcons owner Arthur Blank speaks out against Georgia voting restrictions

Amid calls for boycotts of Georgia sporting events, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank released a statement on Tuesday speaking against recently passed SB 202.

Georgia state legislators passed the bill last week before Gov. Brian Kemp signed it into law. The law limits the number of drop boxes across the state, increases voter ID requirements and gives state-level officials in Republican-controlled Georgia power over county election boards that oversee ballot counts. 

Arthur Blank: 'Make voting easier, not harder'

In a statement released Tuesday, Blank described the right to vote as "sacred" while calling "to make voting easier, not harder."

"Every voice and every vote matters and should be heard through our democratic process in Georgia," Blank's statement reads. "The right to vote is simply sacred. We should be working to make voting easier, not harder for every eligible citizen. 

"To that end, AMBSE leadership, along with our nonprofit partners, conveyed that ideal directly to state officials in recent weeks. Our businesses and family foundation will continue to actively support efforts that advance voting access for the citizens of Georgia and across the nation."

Calls to boycott Masters, MLB All-Star game

Blank's statement arrives amid calls to boycott Georgia sporting events such as the upcoming Masters golf tournament and the MLB All-Star game scheduled to take place in Cobb County this summer. There are also calls to boycott Georgia-based companies like Delta and Coca-Cola. 

The NAACP is leading a coalition of civil rights groups suing to overturn the law, which makes it illegal for non-poll workers to provide food and water for people waiting in line to vote.

Georgia has made headlines in recent elections for hours-long voting lines in minority neighborhoods. The law was passed after a wave of minority voters flipped both U.S. Senate seats in Georgia from Republican to Democrat in a runoff election in January.

    Large euro zone banks have been underreporting their risky assets by 275 billion euros by using their own models to quantify potential losses, the European Central Bank said on Monday. Since the 2008 financial crisis, regulators around the world have been picking apart the internal models that large banks use to calculate how much risk is on their balance sheet and, in turn, how much capital they need. A five-year review by the ECB found that the euro zone's top banks had undercounted their risk-weighted assets by 275 billion euros, or 12%, for example by underestimating losses in cases where a borrower goes bust.

    CALGARY — Thousands of students in Calgary and in northern Alberta are shifting to online learning today because of rising COVID-19 infection rates. Education Minister Adriana LaGrange said last week that Calgary students in grades 7 through 12 would make the move to remote classes. School divisions in Fort McMurray also announced Friday that students in those same grades would be learning from home. LaGrange said soaring infection rates have put schools under "operational pressures," sometimes resulting in severe staff shortages. Alberta currently has the highest rate of active COVID-19 cases in the country, with more than 400 infections per 100,000 people. Last night, Premier Jason Kenney announced the province is lowering the minimum age to receive the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to 40 from 55. Kenney said on Twitter that bookings for the younger ages will start Tuesday. "This decision is based on growing scientific knowledge about the vaccine," he said. There has been vaccine hesitancy around AstraZeneca because of a slightly elevated risk of an extremely rare blood clot disorder, which has so far affected two Canadians — one in Quebec and one in Alberta. On Saturday, the province announced an Alberta man in his 60s was diagnosed with a blood clot linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine.
