An operation conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detonated explosives on a railway line in Siberia that Russia uses for military supplies, a Ukrainian source told Reuters on Thursday. The source, who declined to be identified, said four explosive devices were detonated overnight as a cargo train was moving through the Severomuysky Tunnel in Buryatia region, which borders Mongolia. Such an attack, more than 4,000 km (2,480 miles) from Ukraine, would be a striking demonstration of Kyiv's ability to conduct operations deep inside Russia.
A big disconnect between financial markets and central banks has just got deeper, with traders ramping up their bets on interest rate cuts in the United States and Europe as evidence grows that inflationary pressures are fast abating. Money markets are now pricing in over 100 basis points apiece of rate cuts from the U.S. Federal Reserve and European Central Bank next year, and have this week shifted the expected timing of their first moves firmly forward into the first half of 2024. Euro zone inflation tumbled far more than expected in November, data on Thursday showed, a challenge to the ECB's narrative of stubborn price growth.
LONDON (AP) — Former British finance minister Alistair Darling, a central figure in the U.K.’s response to the 2008 financial crisis who later helped organize the campaign against Scottish independence, has died. He was 70. Darling had been treated for cancer and died in a hospital in Edinburgh, his family said in a statement on Thursday. He served as Britain’s Treasury chief between 2007 and 2010 under Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who praised him as a “popular and effective’’ government
A country investing in cross-border EU defence projects should be given more time to cut its public debt under EU fiscal rules, the head of the European Commission said on Thursday. The fiscal rules are under revision and such a change would go beyond what has so far been agreed among governments, which only want to grant defence spending the status of a "relevant factor" when the Commission assesses whether a budget deficit is within EU limits. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at an annual conference of the European Defence Agency that if such a rule were introduced to the EU's debt and fiscal laws, could be a major change for the 27-nation EU's defence and industrial policy.

In North Dakota, the third top oil-producing U.S. state, crude production rose by 6.5% to 1.3 million bpd in September, the highest since March 2020. Crude output in the Bakken shale has ramped up more than expected this year, said Francisco Blanch, Head of Global Commodities & Derivatives Research for BofA.
NEW YORK (AP) — As his Republican primary rivals return to the debate stage next week, former President Donald Trump will be headlining a closed-door fundraiser in Florida. Trump's campaign has been advertising a chance to win tickets to the “end-of-year reception” in Hallandale Beach, Florida, near Miami on Dec. 6. The former president has chosen to skip his party's three previous primary debates, citing his commanding lead in early state and national polls. But his decision not to schedule a p

TORONTO — First Nations leaders in Ontario are asking a court to review what they call Canada's "discriminatory" carbon price system. A group representing more than 130 First Nations in the province has filed an application for judicial review in Federal Court, saying the system places an unjust price on their communities without suitable cost relief. The Chiefs of Ontario says the federal government failed to meaningfully engage with repeated attempts to find a solution and denied their request

Norway's independent oil firm OKEA has postponed a $220 million acquisition of a 28% stake in the Statfjord area from Equinor due to revised volume estimates, the company said on Thursday. The company said Equinor gave updated information "which indicates a reduction in 2P and 2C volumes of 10% to 15% over the lifetime of the acquired assets" compared to the previous estimates.

TORONTO — A large planetarium and an outdoor adventure park are among a variety of features the Ontario Science Centre would like to see in a new location at Ontario Place – though there is not currently enough space with the new building's much smaller footprint. Infrastructure Ontario released a "business case" Wednesday that the government is using to justify moving the science centre from its current east Toronto location to the downtown Ontario Place. The analysis says moving the attraction

Iowa defensive end Joe Evans spent six years defying the odds. After one season as a walk-on linebacker, he switched positions, earned a scholarship in 2020, shared the team lead for sacks in 2021 and 2022, returned this year as a team captain and wound up earning third-team all-conference honors. It's been quite a ride for the Hawkeyes vocal leader, and Evans believes he can help No. 16 Iowa exceed expectations once more Saturday when his team plays No. 2 Michigan for the Big Ten championship.
