If you’ve just about got your head around the fact that MySpace and Vine are a thing of the past, or that Instagram's timeline is not chronological anymore, wait until you hear the news that Facebook is reportedly changing its name.

The Verge reports that CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to discuss the name change at Facebook's Connect conference on October 28, but that an announcement might come sooner.

It’s believed the name change would signal Zuckerberg’s wish for the company to shed it’s current reputation as a social media brand in favour of being known as a ‘metaverse’ organisation. Earlier this week the organisation announced that it plans to create 10,000 new jobs across the European Union to help ‘build the metaverse’.

In July, he also told the publication that in several years, ‘we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company’.

What that actually means is anyone's guess.

The move follows in the digital footsteps of several technology companies who have changed their names in recent years, including Snapchat, which rebranded itself as Snapchat Inc. 2016 as a ‘camera company', rather than a social media platform.

It’s unknown at this point what Facebook's new name could be, but we’re more than open to welcoming guesses. Spacebook, Faceworld, Facebook 2.0, Boaty McBook Face are all possible contenders (in our dreams).

Zuckerberg launched the social media and social networking service in 2004 with fellow Harvard students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.

Over the years the company grew from a networking site used among college students to an international organisation, mobile app and parent company that now owns the likes of Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus.

Facebook and the creators’ involvement formed the basis of the 2010 film The Social Network starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer.

The Crown’s Claire Foy was recently slated to play Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg in a new TV series about the company and entrepreneur.
