FA Cup fifth round draw: Man City play Bristol City, Man Utd take on West Ham

Because seven fourth-round ties were yet to be concluded, six heading to replays and Derby versus West Ham scheduled to take place after the fifth-round draw, the FA Cup's last 16 ties initially included 23 teams, giving it a rather uncertain air.

Only two of the eight matches – Stoke City's hosting of Brighton, who knocked out the holders Liverpool on Sunday, and Manchester City's trip to Ashton Gate to play Bristol City for the first time since their narrow victory in the League Cup semi-final there five years ago – were certainties.

Manchester United were given another home tie, drawn against West Ham United, the 2-0 winners of Monday night's match against Derby County. David Moyes ensured a trip back to his old employers by virtue of Jarrod Bowen's third goal in two games, which gave the Hammers a first-half lead, before Michail Antonio headed home their second five minutes after the break.

Southampton play host either to the team their manager just left, Luton Town, or Grimsby Town, Leicester welcome the winners of the all-Championship replay between Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City while Ipswich or Burnley will take on the winners of the Sheffield Wednesday vs Fleetwood Town replay.

Leeds United, who have not had a home FA Cup tie for seven years, are on the road again, heading either to Fulham or their conquerors in the 1973 final, Sunderland, while Tottenham Hotspur can serenade either the Racecourse or Bramall Lane with their Chas & Dave anthem, having been paired with Wrexham of the National League or the Championship's second-placed Sheffield United.

The fifth round has been scheduled to take place in midweek and the ties will start on February 27. The choices of ITV and BBC for the live games to be shown across that week are still to be confirmed.

FA Cup draw coming up

One of the stories of the comp so far, of course, has been Wrexham. Will Wrexham manage to get in to to fifth round via a replay? Their manager Phil Parkinson is not worried the greater exposure their FA Cup run has given his players could lead to them being picked off in what remains of the transfer window.

Striker Paul Mullin scored his 27th goal of the season in the 3-3 draw at home to Sheffield United as the National League leaders came within seconds of knocking out the Championship high-fliers.

The non-league club - the lowest-ranked left in the competition - are no strangers to attracting attention after acquiring Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny as their owners almost two years ago and being the subject of a behind-the-scenes Disney+ series.

"Each game we have played in the cup has provided a different test for us and it was good to see us in that company and how some of our players looked against high-end Championship/bottom-end Premier League players and I thought we acquitted ourselves very well," said Parkinson.

"I'd imagine there are a few who have caught the eye of people but we won't be selling anyone, I can assure you of that.

"If anything we will be adding to it."

So that is good news for Wrexham and their fancy new owners.

Welcome to our live coverage for the fifth round draw of the FA Cup, which sees the competition reduced to eight ties of a total of 16 teams.

That said, there are still a fair amount of fourth-round replays to be resolved, so the number of teams still in the draw will be higher.

Who is left in the draw, then? It might be as easy to list some of the big names who have exited the competition so far. In the past few days we have lost two of the big names and most successful clubs in the cup. Liverpool were knocked out by Brighton and Arsenal were sent packing by league rivals Manchester City.

At the moment there are as many as nine Premier League teams left in the draw: Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, Manchester United, Manchester City, West Ham, Leicester, Brighton, Fulham and Leeds.

The replays from the fourth round left to be decided are: Wrexham vs Sheffield United, Ipswich Town vs Burnley, Luton Town vs Grimsby Town, Derby County vs West Ham, Blackburn vs Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday vs Fleetwood and Fulham or Sunderland.

Wrexham are the lowest-ranked team left in the competition and the only non-league side remaining, playing in the National League. Grimsby are the only League Two side remaining, with Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday and Fleetwood all in League One. The remaining teams are all either in the Championship or Premier League.

There is still the potential, then for a “glamour” trip to some of the Premier League’s more storied grounds for some of the lower teams. Or, on the flip side, a tricky trip to somewhere like Kenilworth Road for one of the high-flyers.
