Everything you need to know about getting a COVID vaccine booster shot in Fort Worth

As researchers work to understand more about the new Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, most experts are recommending that until we know more, adults in the U.S. should get vaccinated if they haven’t already, and get a booster shot if they are eligible.

Anyone in the U.S. age 5 and older is eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine, as long as they don’t have contraindications. When it comes to booster doses, anyone 18 and older is eligible if it’s been more than two months since they received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine or more than six months after receiving the second doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines. COVID-19 vaccines and boosters are free and available to all residents in the U.S., regardless of their immigration status.

Although a lot is still unknown about the new Omicron variant, public health officials are urging the public to get vaccinated or boosted to protect themselves against infection, re-infection, hospitalization or death from the virus. Experts are concerned that the Omicron variant might spread more easily than previous variants because it has so many mutations.

“There’s just not enough data for us to make really definitive comments on its transmissibility,” Dr. Jennifer Shuford, the state’s chief epidemiologist, said during a meeting Thursday. Shuford noted that Omicron is “the most divergent variant we’ve seen that has significant spread” throughout the world.

Adults who received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine are eligible to get a booster dose if it’s been more than two months since their original vaccine. Adults who received a Moderna or Pfizer vaccine are eligible to get a booster dose six months after their second dose.

Most pharmacies and many health care facilities are stocked with pediatric, adult and booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccines. Because more adults are now seeking their booster shot, some vaccine providers have recommended calling ahead to schedule a time slot.
