Everything you need to know about Chicken Run 2 on Netflix

Chicken Run 2 is heading to Netflix next year and we've got a first-look image to celebrate the exciting news.

The sequel to the Aardman classic was confirmed in 2018, before it was announced in 2020 that Aardman had partnered with Netflix for the sequel. It then took another two years before we received further information on the movie, but it was worth the wait.

On January 20, 2022, Aardman confirmed the plot details and cast members for the long-awaited Chicken Run sequel, which will officially be called Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.

So what can we expect from the return of Rocky, Ginger and co? Here's everything you need to know about Chicken Run 2.

Chicken Run 2 release date: When can we expect Chicken Run Dawn of the Nugget?

Aardman has confirmed that Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will be released on Netflix in 2023, but we don't yet have a specific date for its release.

It was confirmed back in 2020 that production would start on the sequel in 2021, so we can only assume that happened given that Aardman feel confident enough to announce its arrival next year.

According to RadioTimes.com in 2020, a limited cinema release is planned alongside its Netflix release, so you could be able to see the sequel on the big screen whenever it is released.

There's been no official word on that, though.

Chicken Run 2 cast: Who's coming back for Chicken Run Dawn of the Nugget?

While the sequel is bringing back some of the original cast members, there have been some major changes behind the scenes.

Zachary Levi and Thandiwe Newton are voicing Rocky and Ginger in Chicken Run 2, taking over the roles from Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha, respectively. There's been no official reason why the roles have been recast, but Sawalha posted her own statement in 2020.

"I have officially been plucked, stuffed & roasted," she wrote, alleging that she was recast for "sounding too old".

Ginger and Rocky's family has expanded in the sequel as they've got a little girl called Molly, to be voiced by Bella Ramsey.

The sequel will be bringing back Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton and Lynn Ferguson as Babs, Bunty and Mac, respectively. Benjamin Whitrow – who voiced Fowler in the first movie – passed away in 2017, and Fowler will be voiced by David Bradley in the sequel.

Other recastings include Romesh Ranganathan and Daniel Mays taking over from Timothy Spall and Phil Daniels as crafty rats Nick and Fetcher.

We'll also be seeing some other new characters in the sequel with Josie Sedgwick-Davies playing Frizzle and Nick Mohammed playing Dr Fry.

We haven't had any extra details about their characters yet though.

Chicken Run 2 plot: What's Chicken Run Dawn of the Nugget about?

Along with the Netflix announcement, we got our first official plot synopsis that will basically be the reverse of the first movie.

"Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy's farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world," it reads.

"When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger's happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat.

"For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they're breaking in!"

Chicken Run 2 trailer: Any Chicken Run Dawn of the Nugget footage yet?

Production might have started, but we imagine it'll be a while before we see any footage from the movie as stop-motion animation is a lengthy process.
