Would you ever ask a restaurant to fry your food from home?

Popular Charlotte fried chicken restaurant Mr. Charles Chicken & Fish put an interesting request out on Instagram on Thursday afternoon: “Stop coming in here and asking us to fry your food from home. We are not a you buy we fry establishment!!!”

We saw this and wondered aloud: Do people actually do this?

Of course, the comments came rolling in, and they did not disappoint:

  • “Ay can y’all drop this in the grease for me real quick,” joked Cory Wilkins of Daily Special CLT.

  • “The amount of ppl that ask us to turn their Doritos into nachos is ridiculous. Stop it!” chimed in Derita Dairy Bar & Grill. (More on this below).

  • “Your food is like crack! Can’t blame the people for trying,” pointed out Nicole Perry.

It turns out, Michael Rhynes Jr. — who owns Mr. Charles Chicken & Fish with his father, Michael Rhynes Sr. — wrote the post. He runs the Statesville Avenue location, where back-to-back customers had asked the same thing this morning: “Can they bring in raw food, or go to Food Lion. ...”

He told CharlotteFive that he gets at least one or two customers a week asking the same thing, noting that he’s not the only one who picks up the phone. And just how do they answer a question like that?

“We just tell them that’s not what we do. That’s all we can do, is be respectful, just kindly tell them,” Rhynes said.

Derita Dairy Bar & Grill: No Doritos in the fryer, please

At Derita Dairy Bar & Grill, it’s a common occurrence, as well. Co-owner Devin McDaniel told CharlotteFive that at least twice a week, she gets customers wanting to upgrade their side order of nachos with Doritos they bring along themselves .(The restaurant does offer its own upgrades to those nachos —with chili cheese, taco-style toppings, shrimp and other options.)

“The way we set up our business, everything is customizable,” McDaniel said. “So they figure while it’s customizable, let me customize this whole nacho.” But it’s a request she can’t pull off. “I can’t heat ‘em up because then there’d be Dorito cheese in our oil all day,” she said, laughing.
