Even after rising 21% this past week, CompoSecure (NASDAQ:CMPO) shareholders are still down 34% over the past year

It's nice to see the CompoSecure, Inc. (NASDAQ:CMPO) share price up 21% in a week. But that doesn't change the reality of under-performance over the last twelve months. In fact the stock is down 34% in the last year, well below the market return.

The recent uptick of 21% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a lot at historical fundamentals.

CompoSecure wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

CompoSecure grew its revenue by 32% over the last year. We think that is pretty nice growth. Meanwhile, the share price is down 34% over twelve months, which is disappointing given the progress made. This implies the market was expecting better growth. But if revenue keeps growing, then at a certain point the share price would likely follow.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. A Different Perspective

We doubt CompoSecure shareholders are happy with the loss of 34% over twelve months. That falls short of the market, which lost 12%. That's disappointing, but it's worth keeping in mind that the market-wide selling wouldn't have helped. With the stock down 8.9% over the last three months, the market doesn't seem to believe that the company has solved all its problems. Given the relatively short history of this stock, we'd remain pretty wary until we see some strong business performance. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with CompoSecure (at least 2 which shouldn't be ignored) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
