England and Wales meet for the first time in a World Cup finals with Rob Page's team in need of a famous victory to stand any chance of progression to the knockout stages.

The two nations played each other at Euro 2016 when Daniel Sturridge's late goal won the day, although Wales had the last laugh by reaching the semi-finals after England were knocked out in the last-16 by Iceland.

England are assured of progression from the group in Qatar providing they avoid a four-goal defeat but will be keen to improve on a stuttering performance against USA in their previous match.

For Wales to progress they must beat England and hope for a draw between USA and Iran. If USA vs Iran does not end in a draw, Wales must beat England by four goals to advance.

This is how our writers see the game panning out. You can give your own verdict using our predictor tool below and follow our live match coverage here.

Oliver Brown

Wales 0 England 1

While England luxuriate in the knowledge that progress to the knockout stage is all but assured, their opponents will be in full 'give them some Welsh sugar, boys' mode, channelling the spirit of Michael Sheen. It will be close, but Wales' goal threat has looked blunt so far.

Jason Burt

Wales 0 England 2

England are all but through but are not going to lack motivation. They need a win and that will be hammered home by Gareth Southgate while Wales have looked too old and lacking in quality.

James Ducker

Wales 0 England 2

I thought England would ease past the US and was wrong and there’s the Battle of Britain factor here that I’m sure will see Wales lift their game but they’ve been desperately poor in both of their matches so far and would expect England to do the job.

Sam Dean

Wales 0 England 2

Wales have to attack, and that will leave space in behind. Rob Page’s side are used to defying the odds but this is particular mountain is too steep.

Tom Morgan

Wales 0 England 3

Tired Wales looked awful in midfield against Iran and will struggle against a superior England side in every department. Stage is set for Phil Foden to get his chance, exploit their vulnerabilities, and make his point to Southgate with a goal and an assist.

Thom Gibbs

Wales 0 England 1

Sticking rigidly to the format of the last tournament, the drab 0-0 will be followed with an immediately forgettable narrow victory.

Jim White

Wales 0 England 3

Wales look sadly spent and, after the USA stalemate, England have something to prove.
