England vs Ukraine LIVE!

Harry Kane underlined his status as England's greatest international goalscorer and Bukayo Saka dazzled again in a comfortable 2-0 win over Ukraine to put Gareth Southgate's team in control of Euro 2024 qualifying Group C on Sunday.

Fresh from scoring his 54th goal in the 2-1 victory over Italy on Thursday, Kane made up for a couple of missed chances to break the stalemate in the 37th minute. Arsenal youngster Saka, again England's brightest spark, then doubled the lead before half-time with a sensational curler.

Ukraine had their moments and enjoyed some pressure after the interval but never really looked capable of claiming only a second victory over England in 10 attempts.

The second half was tepid although it was noteworthy for an international debut for Brentford forward Ivan Toney who came on 10 minutes from the end as a substitute for Kane.

Bukayo Saka on Channel 4

19:33 , Marc Mayo

“It was an excellent team performance, a good turnaround from the first game.

“I was getting the ball in good positions and making some dangerous attacks, happy with my performance.

“We can’t just look past these games, we won’t automatically end up in the Euros so we can be really happy.

“Football’s fun, it’s always fun. I’m really enjoying it right now and I hope the happiness continues to the end of the season.”

Gareth Southgate on Channel 4

19:20 , Marc Mayo

“I thought in Italy we played well in the first half then conceded possession too cheaply in the second. Today we made a difficult game look straightforward. We stuck to the task really, really well.

“I thought [James Maddison] had a super game, which didn’t surprise me as he has the personality to play that well.

“It’s the mentality that is the outstanding part, everyone can see technical quality but [Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham] have the humility, want to learn, work hard for the team, are totally reliable and are a joy to work with.”

Ukraine fans laud their players at the full-time whistle

Jude Bellingham on Channel 4

19:10 , Marc Mayo

“It’s important we followed up a really good result against Italy.

“There’s so much I’ve got to learn, I want to be someone who can win the game at two ends of the pitch and dominate the ball.

“You have the best chance with the guys in that changing room and at Dortmund, I’m a sponge at the minute - any chance to learn about the game.”

England chance!

18:54 , Marc Mayo

90+2 mins: Gallagher gallops forward and Grealish’s effort is parried by Trubin... and just clear of the waiting Saka!

18:54 , Marc Mayo

90+1 mins: Another free header for Maguire! Nodded over by the defender as three minutes of stoppage time begin.

18:53 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Stepanenko off for Konoplyanka as England continue to hunt for a third goal.

England chance!

18:49 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: Fine work from Grealish and Chilwell tees up Gallagher, whose shot is palmed away nicely by Trubin!

Maguire nods down a free header from deep in the box at the corner and Grealish should really turn it home...

18:48 , Marc Mayo

85 mins: More subs from Southgate, Maddison and Bellingham off for Gallagher and Grealish.

18:45 , Marc Mayo

82 mins: Toney lurks at the far post as Saka looks to swing a ball in, but he opts for a hard-hit pass to Maddison which skips off the Leicester midfielder and into the goalkeeper’s gloves.

18:43 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Kane off for Toney, the captain’s armband goes to Henderson.

The first Brentford player to appear for England’s senior men’s team since 1939!

18:42 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Time for an England change!

And it’s a debut for Brentford’s Toney, who is getting prepared to enter the match.

18:36 , Marc Mayo

74 mins: Yaremchuk taken off for Dovbyk as Ukraine swap strikers before the corner.

Malinovskyi’s ball is too deep and its worked back to the visiting goalkeeper.

18:36 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: Just a sense that England want to finish this job in the next few minutes, Bellingham racing down the left before a clearance stop Saka from tapping home.

Ukraine break to win their first corner, having yet to fire off a shot this half.

18:33 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: Maddison rolls a short free-kick to Saka, who lets fly from the edge of the box and sends the ball high into the Wembley sky.

18:32 , Marc Mayo

69 mins: No sign yet of that England subs bench bursting into action, with Grealish, Toney and Gallagher surely looking on with hope of adding some life to this game.

Saka tries is best and wins a foul off Malinovskyi near the 18-yard line, that’s a booking.

18:29 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: England interrupt a long spell of Ukraine possession with an attempt to slip Saka in behind, but Trubin is easily off his line.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

18:25 , Marc Mayo

England have been so dominant that it has heralded the return of the Mexican wave and paper airplanes at Wembley.

A strangely flat atmosphere with so many kids in attendance and almost an expectation that the Three Lions will win.

18:24 , Marc Mayo

60 mins: Inevitably, it’s time for a change from the visitors.

Three to be exact; Buyalski for Karavev, Mudryk for Tysankhov, Mykolenko for Sobol.

England chance!

18:21 , Marc Mayo

58 mins: Walker thinks about having a whack before rolling in Saka.

A fine low cross is mishit by Bellingham and won’t trouble the keeper! It was just behind him in reality.

Another ball in from the left is hooked away.

18:19 , Marc Mayo

56 mins: Ukraine have pushed up the pitch a little since the break, England just need to make sure they don’t cede control of a game they have dominated.

18:15 , Marc Mayo

53 mins: Bellingham again pops up in his own half to smartly beat his man and win a foul. He’s just so good on the transition from defence to attack.

18:14 , Marc Mayo

50 mins: Maddison produces a cute turn on the edge of the box and heads straight for goal, attempting a rather ambitious near-post piledriver that flies off target.

18:10 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Ukraine get on the front foot but England break out with a lovely touch from Kane before a simply sublime piece of skill from Bellingham to beat two challenges.

Kick-off! England 2-0 Ukraine

We’re back underway with the Three Lions on course for a second consecutive Euro 2024 qualification win.

Second-half coming up

18:07 , Marc Mayo

The players are making their way back out onto the Wembley pitch!

Stats check

18:06 , Marc Mayo

England well on top in the stats, two goals to nil most importantly.

The numbers also read ten shots to three, and five on target to zero.

The Three Lions have held 61 per cent of the ball, too.

Second-half highlights: Bukayo Saka makes it two

18:04 , Marc Mayo

Ukraine left searching for route back into the match

18:00 , Marc Mayo

A tough afternoon for Ukraine ahead with the hosts looking so confident.

They have struggled to create all throughout the first half, relying really on England errors to forge half-chances.

In fact, they haven't had a shot on target.

How will England approach the second half?

17:58 , Marc Mayo

England's players will want another goal or two before settling into cruise control, and Gareth Southgate will want no thoughts drifting towards next week's Premier League fixtures.

We could, and arguably should, see the likes of Ivan Toney presuming Ukraine don't get back into it.

First-half highlights: Harry Kane gets England rocking

17:51 , Marc Mayo

45+3 mins: Kane back superbly to win the ball in his own half before Bellingham wins a foul to quell a late Ukraine move.

17:49 , Marc Mayo

45+1 mins: Three minutes added on.

17:49 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: A big test for Ukraine now, they won’t want to crumble and suffer a big goal difference swing as they have real hopes of making Euro 2024.

Mudryk flies a shot from range well wide.

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

17:46 , Marc Mayo

What a few minutes for England and especially Bukayo Saka, with a brilliant assist and goal.

It wasn’t so long ago that the Arsenal winger was jostling for a place in the front three but he has made himself a shoo-in for one of the places besides Kane.

17:46 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: I was just writing about what that first goal might do to the game, as England looked threatening without much space - so awarding them anymore would be rather dangerous.

Well, now we know.

And it’s almost three as Kane turns in the box and strikes low and hard, saved by Trubin.

GGGOOOOAAALLLLL!!!! England 2-0 Ukraine

17:43 , Marc Mayo

39 mins: SAKA WITH A STUNNER!

A beautiful hit as he cuts in on his left from 20 yards out and unleashes a true top-bins effort for 2-0.

GGOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!! England 1-0 Ukraine

17:40 , Marc Mayo

37 mins: KANE!

Number 55 for the England striker as Southgate’s gameplan pays off, a crossfield to Saka whipped in by the Arsenal man for a perfectly timed finish from a lovely cross.

17:40 , Marc Mayo

36 mins: Ukraine forced to throw their bodies on the line as England pounce for a rare attack into space.

First Saka, then Maddison and finally Henderson drive shots into blocks before the visitors clear.

17:38 , Marc Mayo

34 mins: Henderson swings a ball into Maddison, who heads straight at Trubin as he takes the ball off the advancing Chilwell.

Foul given anyway, for a push.

17:37 , Marc Mayo

33 mins: Mudryk turns on the afterburners for a run down the left, cutting back for Maguire to clear - although the flag is up for Yaremchuk in the build-up.

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

17:35 , Marc Mayo

England - and particularly Kane - are growing in menace but this is still a more even game than the meeting at Euro 2020, when Gareth Southgate’s side won the quarter-final at a canter.

Ukraine are a good technical side, underlined by their commitment to playing out from the back and through the lines.

17:35 , Marc Mayo

31 mins: Kane probably offside as he darts in from a quick free-kick and nudges the bouncing ball over the bar.

That came from another free-kick and Southgate is having words with the fourth official over a number of sturdy challenges being put on his players.

17:33 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: Smart play from Henderson to shift it to Saka, those two are linking up well down the right, before his pass lets him down.

17:31 , Marc Mayo

27 mins: The Three Lions dominant with 62 per cent possession as the half-hour mark approaches, to be fair Ukraine are very organised at the back and not giving away any cheap space.

England chance!

17:29 , Marc Mayo

25 mins: Henderson lofts a very high, looping ball towards the far post and Kane cannot connect properly with it on the stretch. A mighty difficult chance.

Bellingham appears to keep it alive with a low cross, which Ukraine clear.

 (The FA via Getty Images)
(The FA via Getty Images)

17:26 , Marc Mayo

22 mins: Maguire does Walker no favours with a pass back towards his own half and Ukraine steal in, playing it patient.

Malinovskyi finds space to fire from range and it bounces away off the backside of his team-mate, Mudryk.

17:23 , Marc Mayo

19 mins: England have not quite found their range yet, often relying on crossfields to Saka. Henderson underlaps on the Arsenal man to win a corner.

Karavaev heads Chilwell’s cross clear before the recycled ball in is headed straight at the goalkeeper by Kane.

17:21 , Marc Mayo

16 mins: Trubin drops Saka’s cross at Maddison’s feet and the England player throws a foot at the loose ball... which bounces just wide!

A scrappy second save does the business and a foul is given, a bit harshly, against Maddison.

The goalkeeper will require treatment.

17:19 , Marc Mayo

15 mins: Yaremchuk comfortably offside as he picks up a ball over the top, meant for Malinovskyi in fact, before dragging an effort wide. Eventually, the flag rises.

(AP)

17:16 , Marc Mayo

13 mins: Just like against Italy, England suffered an early nervy moment before settling onto the ball and pinning their opponent in.

Bellingham thinks he should have a foul 35 yards from goal yet Stepanenko got the ball as he slid in.

17:14 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: Saka does well to win a free-kick down the right and Maddison whips it in.

Maguire challenges and it drops for Stones, his split second chance goes in a scramble and Ukraine break!

Walker rushes back to quash the chance.

Penalty appeal!

17:12 , Marc Mayo

9 mins: Kane hits the deck in the box yet no dice... Perhaps not enough in it as he spun his defender and went down.

17:11 , Marc Mayo

7 mins: Maddison dropping deep and inside, as Southgate explained before the game, to cause issues away from the left flank.

A first spell on the ball for England sees the Leicester man spin a fine ball out for Chilwell before a crossfield pass to Saka is overhit.

17:09 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: England attempting to press Ukraine’s early possession and Walker snuffs out a dangerous ball in behind for Mudryk.

It’s given away however and a deflected shot rolls kindly for Pickford.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

17:07 , Marc Mayo

Ukraine’s entire away end is bouncing, they’re certainly making their presence felt at Wembley Stadium and enjoying their football amid the ongoing war situation at home.

17:06 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: The Ukraine fans are bouncing up and down in the away end as the England faithful look to get a bit of atmosphere of their own going following that early stoppage.

Malinovskyi back to his feet.

17:05 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: Malinovskyi in a heap on the ground after a collision mid-air with Chilwell. An early runout for the ice pack.

Gareth Southgate happy to go with Ben Chilwell

16:36 , Marc Mayo

It’s been over a year since Ben Chilwell has played for England and the Three Lions boss has spoken of the challenges the Chelsea defender faces today.

Gareth Southgate said: “Yes, he is ready, without a doubt. We have to be mindful of what his attributes are compared to a Luke Shaw or a Kieran Trippier. Very good in the attacking third of the pitch, for example. He likes to play high.

“He is playing as a wing-back so there is some adaptation for him if we are playing with a four. It is a different role, defensively, in particular.

“But he is ready and physically, he is in really good shape. He has had a couple of setbacks but he is a good athlete and I think that would have helped his recovery, definitely.”

Reece James: England and Chelsea being ‘cautious’ with defender’s fitness, says Gareth Southgate

14:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

Gareth Southgate has played down concerns over Reece James’ withdrawal from the England squad, insisting that both he and Chelsea are being “cautious” with the defender’s fitness.

James has missed more matches than he has played for both club and country this season after suffering a serious knee injury, along with a further setback and is now delicately managing a hamstring issue.

The right-back was a key player for England before his run of injuries, starting in all four matches before the World Cup.

Unfortunately, he is unavailable to stake his claim against Ukraine at Wembley on Sunday and Southgate gave full details of James’ withdrawal in his pre-match press conference.

“Reece has gone back, he’s not completely happy with how his leg feels,” Southgate said. “He was a little bit concerned about that earlier in the week.”

Chelsea have struggled without one of their most important players this season, leading to manager Graham Potter seeking alternative options on the right side of defence.

England boss Southgate responds to United States interest in Balogun

14:39 , Jonathan Gorrie

Gareth Southgate has responded to the United States’ attempts to poach Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun away from England.

The England Under-21s striker pulled out of Lee Carsley’s latest squad due to injury, and appeared to take to Instagram to complain about not being selected for the senior team, writing: “In life go where you are appreciated.”

The United States yesterday confirmed contact with the striker, who has scored 18 goals in 29 games while on loan at Reims, which is more than Paris Saint-Germain pair Lionel Messi and Neymar and just two fewer than Ligue 1 top scorer Kylian Mbappe.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Euro 2024 qualifier at home to Ukraine on Sunday, England boss Southgate revealed his stance on an increasingly tense situation.

He said: “It is up to the player to weigh up where his heart feels. Is he prepared to wait a little bit for an opportunity if he backs himself and feels he can push his way into our squad? Because anybody who has followed us will know that we will give young players a chance.
