England vs Germany - LIVE!

England head to the World Cup buoyed by a rousing comeback against Germany but a late error by Nick Pope meant under-fire Gareth Southgate’s side had to make do with a 3-3 draw at the end of a frenetic second half.

The Three Lions were relegated from the Nations League top tier following Friday’s loss to Italy and pressure looked set to increase on Southgate, and Harry Maguire, after Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty and a stunning Kai Havertz strike.

But the hosts displayed the kind of resilience and ruthlessness their manager called for in the build-up. Luke Shaw scored England’s first goal from open play in this Nations League campaign to bring hope, with substitute Mason Mount lashing home a leveller eight minutes after they had gone two goals behind.

Wembley was bouncing and the noise went up several notches when Harry Kane slammed home an 83rd-minute penalty following Nico Schlotterbeck’s foul on Jude Bellingham, but there was to be no return to winning ways. Havertz tapped in after back-up goalkeeper Pope spilled a Serge Gnabry shot, meaning England go to Qatar without a win in six but boosted by a much-needed show of skill and spirit.

Analysis from Wembley

22:55 , Matt Verri

Gareth Southgate publicly staked his reputation on Harry Maguire ahead of kick-off against Germany and the England manager was not repaid despite his players rallying to produce a stunning comeback in a 3-3 thriller at Wembley.

The Manchester United captain was guilty of key mistakes leading to both Ilkay Gundogan and Kai Havertz scoring before his team-mates fought back through finishes from Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and a Harry Kane penalty.

It was the required response from a team which appeared to be sleepwalking into a World Cup having last week been relegated in their UEFA Nations League group, and are now six games without a win - the longest such run in their history.

Big impact off the bench from Saka...

Southgate: We showed tremendous spirit

22:24 , Matt Verri

“This week we’ve learned a huge amount. They’ve had to step forward, and they’ve had to as a group come close together, and it’s going to benefit us in the long run, no doubt.

“The team have to be together. Tonight a couple of errors have cost us the goals, but I focused on the fact they played with tremendous spirit and showed a belief that we haven’t showed in the last few games.

“I think the crowd could see that, and they rose to it.”

Bukayo Saka 8

Made a big difference from the bench, adding verve to England’s attack and setting up Mount’s goal. Unlucky not to score a late winner when Ter Stegen turned his effort around the post.

Kane’s post-match thoughts

21:55 , Matt Verri

“That was a lot better. Thought we played really well, we were unfortunate to go 2-0 behind. A mistake and a great goal from the edge of the box. We did really well to stay into the game and get the lead, then unfortunately another error.

“But the fight in the team, the mentality we showed - we didn’t get the win but we can be proud of what we have done, and it puts us into a good place going into the World Cup. A shame we couldn’t get the win, but we keep going.”

Mood lifted?

FT: England 3-3 Germany

21:42 , Matt Verri

And breathe!

Mental second-half, it finishes 3-3 at Wembley. Havertz’s second goal denies England a remarkable comeback.

The mood has been lifted regardless though for the Three Lions, heading into the World Cup.

21:39 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Six minutes added on!

Who knows what happens from here - match has slowed down a little bit after a crazy 20 minutes.

21:36 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Saka almost puts England back in front!

Kane with a great pass and he’s clean through on goal. Nobody up with him, has to go onto his right foot and the shot is tipped behind.

GOAL! England 3-3 Germany | Kai Havertz 87'

21:33 , Matt Verri

Germany level again!

Gnabry’s strike from outside the box looks to be a comfortable enough save for Pope, he spills it straight out though and Havertz has a simple finish.

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

21:32 , Matt Verri

What a turnaround. This stirring comeback should dramatically shift the mood around England and Southgate going into Qatar, which is exactly what the manager had hoped would happen.

21:31 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Germany absolutely stunned, England still right on top.

Still not far off ten minutes to go with added time you’d imagine, still time for the visitors.

GOAL! England 3-2 Germany | Harry Kane 83’

21:29 , Matt Verri

ENGLAND TAKE THE LEAD!

What a turnaround it’s been. Hammered into the top corner, Ter Stegen went the right way but he got nowhere near it.

PENALTY ENGLAND!

21:28 , Matt Verri

82 mins: It is a penalty - had to be. Dreadful challenge on Bellingham. Schlotterbeck maybe lucky it’s only a yellow card.

Over to Kane...

21:27 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Side-netting!

Many inside Wembley thought England were in front. Kane’s deflected strike flies into the side-netting.

Hang on... referee over to look at the monitor. England could well have a penalty here.

21:26 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Musiala off, Muller on. It’s all England now, Germany struggling to get out and they can’t match the intensity from the hosts.

Bellingham down in the Germany half, looks in a lot of pain. England continue to play on though, he’s back up now.

21:23 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Now what?!

It’s absolutely frantic all of a sudden, England flying into the challenges. Southgate with a big roar of approval as Mount slides in right in front of him.

Musiala slows things down, goes down with cramp.

GOAL! England 2-2 Germany | Mason Mount 75'

21:20 , Matt Verri

ENGLAND LEVEL!

Brilliant goal too. Saka with wonderful footwork in midfield, driving past the challenges.

Comes to Mount on the edge of the box and it’s a superb first-time finish from the edge of the box.

GOAL! England 1-2 Germany | Luke Shaw 71'

21:17 , Matt Verri

An actual England goal from open play!

Game. On. James with a great cross, bobbles through to Shaw at the back post. Effort hammered through Ter Stegen, rolls over the line before it’s cleared away. Referee confirms it crossed.

21:15 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Bellingham tries his luck from distance, straight at Ter Stegen.

There wasn’t a lot of confidence among the England players before that second goal. Doubt it’s going to be any better now.

GOAL! England 0-2 Germany | Kai Havertz 67'

21:12 , Matt Verri

Sensational from Havertz!

Maguire caught on the ball deep in the Germany half and the visitors break.

Again the England defence is stretched, it comes to Havertz 20 yards out and it’s a wonderful curling finish into the top corner.

21:11 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Southgate has seen enough, two changes with about 25 minutes to go.

Mount and Saka on, Foden and Sterling off. Straight swap in the two wide positions alongside Kane.

21:10 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Pope waiting for the ball to roll into the box so he can pick it up, it almost doesn’t though and he has to slide in.

Games is really stretched now, England leaving a lot of space in midfield and at the back. Look really nervy in possession, sloppy passes all over the pitch.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

21:09 , Matt Verri

Germany’s away support is goading England by chanting ‘football’s coming home’ back at them while leading 1-0 here at Wembley Stadium. The atmosphere has grown tense inside the national team’s ground after Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty.

21:07 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Has to be 2-0!

Sensational from Musiala, drifting away from the challenges in midfield. Maguire once again opts to throw himself to the floor and gets nowhere near it.

Ball slid in for Werner, drags the shot wide. Massive chance.

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

21:06 , Matt Verri

Another bad moment for Maguire will also lead to more difficult questions for Gareth Southgate, who said he would stake his “reputation” on the centre-half before the Italy game.

Anyone who has watched Maguire for Manchester United over the past year should not be terribly surprised by his clumsy foul on Musiala.

21:05 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Real chance for Germany to double their lead, Werner with two players free in the box to pick out.

Not enough pace on the cut back, James can get back and clear the danger. Havertz was one of those waiting for a tap-in.

Germany stay on the attack, Sule drives forward and plays a nice one-two. Drags an effort wide from distance.

21:03 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Corner for England, who are building the pressure now on the German defence.

Comes out to Bellingham similar position to that shot a few minutes ago. Slips this time and shanks it wide.

21:01 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Better from England, patient build-up on the edge of the box.

James cuts it back for Bellingham, strides onto it but fires the shot well over the bar. More intent from the hosts though.

21:00 , Matt Verri

54 mins: England want a penalty now, as the ball bounces around in the box.

Very optimistic considering Raum headed it. Still plenty of time for England to get themselves level but they’re in real danger of seeing the winless run extended.

GOAL! England 0-1 Germany | Ilkay Gundogan 52'

20:58 , Matt Verri

Easy as you like!

Strolls up and rolls it into the bottom corner, Pope barely moved until it was in the net. Maybe thought Gundogan was going down the middle.

Maguire has gifted Germany the lead.

PENALTY!

20:57 , Matt Verri

It’s given. Referee needed about five seconds to give that.

Looks like Gundogan will take.

20:56 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Wow, England are really lucky there.

Maguire with a dreadful pass straight out to Musiala, who runs at the centre-back. Completely beats him, looks to be brought down but no penalty is given.

VAR tell the referee to go and have a look at the monitor though...

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

20:55 , Matt Verri

Timo Werner was booed onto the pitch at Wembley Stadium as he came on at half-time for Jonas Hofmann.

Sometimes at these England games the Premier League supporters don’t park their club allegiances so a chance to jeer at former Chelsea forward was too tempting not to take.

20:55 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Sterling inside onto his right foot, curled effort towards the far corner is easily saved.

Third shot on target of the night for Sterling - certainly looks the most likely.

20:53 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Havertz has dropped deeper since Werner’s introduction, with the RB Leipzig striker playing centrally up front.

Kimmich slides a lovely pass through to Musiala, cut-back is cut out by England though.

Back underway

20:51 , Matt Verri

Up and running again at Wembley. Werner on for Hofmann.

You can add four to that...

20:46 , Matt Verri

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

20:40 , Matt Verri

If Gareth Southgate thought Friday’s insipid defeat in Milan was “a step in the right direction”, he should be encouraged by his side’s first half display.

England have created three or four good openings, Sterling twice having efforts saved, but are still missing the finishing touch.

HT: England 0-0 Germany

20:35 , Matt Verri

As close as Germany have come, Kimmich drilling a low effort at goal from 25 yards out. Just wide of the far post.

Pretty much the last kick of the half, the sides go into the break level.

England with some bright moments, particularly on the break, but once again they’ve been unable to take a chance from open play.

20:33 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on.

On the verge of another goalless half for England. Well over 500 minutes since they last scored from open play.

20:32 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Bellingham left in a heap on the halfway line, once again the whistle doesn’t go though.

Germany’s counter breaks down, England can launch one of their own. Kane slides the ball in for Sterling, drills an effort towards the near post and it’s comfortably saved.

20:30 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Sterling wants a free-kick out wide, doesn’t get it. Foden then loses the ball on the edge of the box, he hasn’t had a great match so far.

Shaw does well to win it back as he reads play well - only to run it out with a really heavy touch.

20:28 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Bit of a lull in the match, Germany seeing a lot of the ball but not doing too much with it.

England do press higher up the pitch this time, Kane closing down Ter Stegen and the goalkeeper sends it straight out of play.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

20:25 , Matt Verri

John Stones looks to have pulled his hamstring and will play no further part in England’s match.

He was just running off the ball and now looks distraught as he looks set for a spell on the sidelines. Kyle Walker will come on in his place.

20:25 , Matt Verri

37 mins: That will be that for Stones as he trudges off, City team-mate Walker replaces him.

Once he’s tied his laces that is - safe to say he wasn’t particularly prepared to come on.

20:23 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Worry for England, Stones drives forward but he’s pulled up off the ball holding his hamstring. Big concern.

Walker swiftly off the bench to warm-up - Stones with his head in his hands as he lies on the floor.

20:22 , Matt Verri

34 mins: England pushed back into their own box, as Germany patiently keep possession.

No space for the visitors though, Musiala unable to do anything with the ball and it runs behind for a goal-kick.

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

20:20 , Matt Verri

A brief airing of the Harry Maguire chant from England fans should be music to the defender’s ears after another mixed reception pre-match.

On the pitch, England are starting to build pressure but are continuing to squander chances to score from open play.

20:18 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Kehrer down in the box, under pressure from Sterling. Nothing given.

Sterling was definitely the wrong side, not sure there was any real contact though. Play goes on, Germany continue to look comfortable on the ball but England offering a real threat in transition.

20:16 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Well... that was woeful.

England doing their best work on the counter, Sterling completely free down the middle and he has Foden free to his right.

Tries to play it through to his former club team-mate first time, and instead punts it out for a Germany goal-kick.

20:14 , Matt Verri

27 mins: All England now, they’ve been lifted by that Sterling chance and the crowd have responded. Second corner in quick succession.

Foden swings it in deep, Kane heads it back across goal. Cleared out to the England captain, ambitious volley and it’s not a million miles away from finding the far corner. Really good spell from the hosts.

20:12 , Matt Verri

25 mins: BIG SAVE!

And a big chance. It’s brilliant from England on the counter, Rice and Dier starting it on the left.

Shaw then plays a sensational ball in behind for Sterling, he chops onto his left foot but his effort is saved by Ter Stegen.

20:11 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Bellingham and Foden throw themselves into a couple of challenges, reward is the ball falling for Kane.

Comes to James, he gives it away cheaply and now Germany can break. Crossed into the box, bit of a mess as it bobbles around before Bellingham and Maguire do enough to clear the danger.

20:08 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Shaw fires a pass inside, straight to a white shirt. Problem is England are playing in red.

England again nearly cause themselves a massive problem, Stones playing a backpass to Pope without looking. Hofmann inches away from getting there before the goalkeeper.

Nizaar Kinsella at Wembley

20:06 , Matt Verri

Jude Bellingham has looked sharp in the opening stages with his slide tackle leading to a Phil Foden and Harry Kane counter attack early on.

The 19-year-old is already earning his 17th cap just over two years since his England debut.

20:05 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Sane hammers it straight into the wall, just over waist high. Doubt that was the plan.

England stopped from breaking away this time by a pretty cynical foul - Germany growing wise to those counters.

20:04 , Matt Verri

16 mins: James and Raum collide on the left off the ball, as the German tries to make a run in behind.

Referee wasn’t looking, but eventually the free-kick is given. Fourth official must have given it - really good position for the visitors.

20:02 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Gundogan floats a pass over the top, Shaw reads it and heads it away.

Germany swiftly back on the attack, Maguire has to come wide to cover and he concedes a corner. Kimmich will take.

Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley

20:00 , Matt Verri

First shot of the night goes to Germany but Gareth Southgate will be encouraged by England’s start. They look more zippy going forward than in Milan, and the front three have already shown glimpses of some promising link-up play.

19:59 , Matt Verri

11 mins: First nervy moment from England, all of Pope’s making.

Ball played back to him, takes a poor touch and then takes an age to clear the ball as he’s closed down. Ball is charged down, comes to Gundogan and he fires an effort over the bar.

19:57 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Kehrer with far too much time on the right, allowed to move the ball out of his feet and whip a cross in. Dier puts it behind for a corner.

Deep cross, too deep really. Havertz robbed by Stones as he keeps it in play, England able to counter again. Sterling very nearly puts Foden in on goal, pass is really well cut out.

19:55 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Bellingham slides in, Germany want a free-kick but they don’t get it. England can break.

Foden leads the counter, out wide to Kane and he tries to find the Man City man at the back post. Flashes across the face of goal and away to safety.

19:53 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Germany pressing right up the pitch out of possession, Bellingham has to be careful deep in his own half.

The hosts work their way through the press nicely, Kane looks to fizz it out to Shaw but there’s too much on the pass.

19:50 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Kane crunched just inside the Germany half, advantage is played. Not the greatest of early challenges.

England captain is involved heavily early on, makes a run down the right and his low cross is blocked.

KICK-OFF!

We are up and running!

One last chance for England to get things right ahead of the World Cup.

Here we go - teams are out at Wembley.

Tributes will be paid to Queen Elizabeth II ahead of kick-off, footage shown of her presenting the World Cup trophy to England in 1966.

Southgate’s pre-match thoughts

19:36 , Matt Verri

“It’s been a testing week. I said to the players, ‘These are necessary steps for a team to go through some times’.

“The players have been exceptional in how they’ve stepped up and shown some real leadership. We’re going to be playing under pressure at a World Cup so it doesn’t do us any harm to be in that situation already.”

Not long now!

19:29 , Matt Verri

Kick-off coming up in 15 minutes at Wembley.

England could really do with some goals, a positive performance and a win. Not asking too much.

Arriving in Qatar with the winless run extended and more problems in front of goal would be a real issue.

Souness defends Alexander-Arnold

19:18 , Matt Verri

Trent Alexander-Arnold must go to the World Cup despite being dropped for England’s game against Germany, Graeme Souness has claimed.

Gareth Southgate has left the Liverpool right-back out of his matchday squad for the Nations League match at Wembley having kept him on the bench against Italy last week.

“For tournament football, you have to start a game believing you are going to play the very best of what team you are playing against,” he told talkSPORT.

“In that sense, you might start with a better defender but you’ve got to involve Trent in your World Cup squad.”

Attacking woes for England

18:48 , Matt Verri

Gareth Southgate is not about to abandon his back-three against Germany tonight, nor at this winter’s World Cup, after the England manager spent the weekend considering how his side can be more of a threat going forward.

Unless England score in the first six minutes at Wembley this evening, they will surpass 500 minutes without a goal from open play and there is no more pressing issue for Southgate than addressing their chronic lack of creativity before Qatar.

Two changes for England

18:40 , Matt Verri

So Stones returns for England as expected, he starts alongside Dier and Maguire at the back.

Rice and Bellingham partner each other in midfield once again, as Henderson has to settle for a place on the bench, while Shaw comes in at wing-back.

Front three as expected - likes of Toney and Abraham will hope they get a chance to make their case in the second-half.

Germany low on confidence too

18:21 , Matt Verri

Germany have problems of their own to try and fix ahead of the World Cup.

They’ve won just one of their last six matches, and were beaten last time out by Hungary as they produced a performance that left boss Hansi Flick incredibly frustrated.

“The first half was our worst since I’ve been here,” Flick said after the match.

“Low confidence, little intensity, few chances, many mistakes. I wasn’t expecting that. Everyone has to work on themselves. The time for experiments is over.”

Southgate makes fresh plea to England fans

18:12 , Matt Verri

Gareth Southgate has urged England supporters to get behind his struggling team at Wembley tonight, saying: “We can’t succeed with the fans against us”.

In their final game before the Qatar World Cup, the Three Liones are aiming to avoid going a sixth competitive match without a win for the first time.

Southgate was booed by sections of the travelling support after Friday’s 1-0 defeat by Italy in Milan and was also targeted during England’s last home game, the 4-0 defeat by Hungary at Molineux in June.

The manager, who on Sunday admitted his contract to 2024 will not save him from the sack if England flop in Qatar, is concerned about the reaction of the crowd this evening but stressed that “togetherness” between supporters and the team has been a huge part of the Three Lions’ recent success.

“Part of the reason we’ve been successful in the tournaments has been the feeling of togetherness,” Southgate said. “We can’t succeed with fans against us, or you guys [the media] not feeling warm towards us.”

Good memories for England...

18:04 , Matt Verri

It was a 1-1 draw when the two sides met in Munich back in June, Harry Kane scoring a late penalty in that Nations League clash.

This is the first time Germany have returned to Wembley since the last 16 of Euro 2020, when England came out on top on their run to the final.

Safe to say the mood surrounding the team was slightly better then than it is now...

Prediction

17:49 , Matt Verri

It could be a nervy display from England tonight, needing an improved display and result but coming into the match with no real confidence.

Two teams in need of momentum before the World Cup may just both leave Wembley unhappy.
