Emmerdale's David to be replaced in shop scenes after sad exit

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's Eric Pollard searches for David Metcalfe's replacement in Friday's episode (December 1) as he tries to keep the shop on track.

David's loved ones were surprised this week as he bowed out from the village for a fresh start in London after a week of emotional revelations.

In Friday's episode, Eric's priority is keeping the shop afloat now that David won't be around to run it.

Eric approaches David's ex-wife Tracy Robinson to take on some shifts, confident that she can quickly get up to speed again after her previous experience working there.

David's exit week saw his relationship with his son Jacob Gallagher crumble as the truth about the student's relationship with Victoria Barton was exposed.

David felt betrayed by Jacob's decision to pursue his ex-partner. In a final row, he told Jacob not to call him "dad" anymore.

Other scenes across the week saw David discover the truth about Eric's recent Parkinson's Disease diagnosis.

This all coincided with news that David's young daughter Amba needed him, so he headed off to London to support her.

In real life, Matthew Wolfenden – who plays David – chose to leave Emmerdale this year to pursue other projects.

Appearing on ITV's This Morning in September, Matthew explained: "I'm so nervous about leaving, almost two decades.

"It feels like the right time. The door's left open, they're not killing me off, I've been promised. I'm allowed to tell you that. So who knows, I might be back, we will see."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
