Emma Stone's controversial romantic comedy Aloha is now available to watch on Netflix UK and Ireland.

The 2015 film, directed by Jerry Maguire's Cameron Crowe, follows a US Air Force officer who moves to Hawaii as part of his job, and once there he clashes with the locals while also having some romance and family issues.

Aloha has a big-name cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, John Krasinski, and Alec Baldwin, but it's Stone's character Captain Allison Ng that was the centre of the controversy.

Captain Ng is stated to be a quarter Chinese and a quarter Hawaiian, while the Stone is neither. People called out this aspect of Stone's character, as well as Hollywood's general continued practice of casting Caucasian actors in films set in Hawaii.

Actor Sandra Oh made a pointed joke about the film at Golden Globes 2019 ceremony, calling Aloha a "studio film with an Asian-American lead", prompting Stone to say she was sorry.

Crowe also apologised for the film not long after its release, stating: "We were extremely proud to present the island, the locals and the film community with many jobs for over four months.

"Emma Stone was chief among those who did tireless research, and if any part of her fine characterization has caused consternation and controversy, I am the one to blame... I am grateful for the dialogue. And from the many voices, loud and small, I have learned something very inspiring.

"So many of us are hungry for stories with more racial diversity, more truth in representation, and I am anxious to help tell those stories in the future."

Around the same time, Stone told news.com.au: "I’ve learned on a macro level about the insane history of whitewashing in Hollywood and how prevalent the problem truly is. It’s ignited a conversation that’s very important."

Beyond the backlash, Aloha didn't perform well critically or commercially. It has a low 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and didn't make its production budget back at the box office.
