Emilia Clarke Advises You Get a 'Man-Sized Box' of Tissues While Watching 'Me Before You'

Emilia Clarke has seen the finished cut of her upcoming romantic drama Me Before You. So have her friends. And they assure future viewers — especially fans of the 2012 Jojo Moyes novel it’s based on — that they are going to need a copious amount of tissues to make it through this weeper.

“Like a box of Kleenex, if any one of my friends have anything to do with it,” the 29-year-old Clarke (Game of Thrones) told Yahoo Movies at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. “Like a full box. Like the man-sized box.”

She even suggested a visit to your nearby wholesale store to bulk up on them. “Go to Cash & Carry,” she said. (Editor’s Note: Or Costco, or BJs, or wherever you prefer to buy your industrial-sized tissue boxes.) “Give ‘em to your friends.”

Adapted for the screen by Moyes and directed by Thea Sharrock, Me Before You stars Clarke as Louisa, a working-class woman in rural England hired by the wealthy family of Will (Sam Claflin), a recently paralyzed man, to take care of him. And since Will has been understandably down in the dumps since a car accident left him disabled, perhaps she can warm up his spirits in the process. Romance inevitably ensues.

Moyes’s book has inspired a fervent fan following, and according to Twitter reactions, even the film’s first trailer left many in its fan club in tears.

Clarke pointed out that the story is full of humor as well, which is all the more reason why its more serious and touching moments will elicit some bawling. “It’s an incredibly affecting movie,” she said. “But sometimes you’re laughing. And I think that’s why it gets you. Because sometimes you’re laughing and the next minute you’re like, 'What?’ And you start crying again.”

And yes, Clarke cried too. “Which is ridiculous because I know what happens,” she laughed. “I’m doing some of it.”
