Emerson Royal injury: Tottenham wing-back to undergo knee surgery in latest Spurs blow

Tottenham have suffered a fresh injury blow, with Emerson Royal set for surgery after damaging his knee playing for Brazil.

The full-back was forced off during Saturday’s 2-1 friendly defeat by Morocco and is expected to miss around six weeks, making him a significant doubt to play again this season.

Emerson's injury leaves Spurs' new acting head coach Cristian Stellini with just one recognised option on the right side of defence in January signing Pedro Porro, although Japhet Tanganga has featured in that position previously and other players could deputise at wing-back.

Spurs loaned summer signing Djed Spence to French club Rennes in January and surprisingly released Matt Doherty, who joined Atletico Madrid on a free transfer.

Ben Davies is also touch and go to play again this season after suffering a hamstring injury in Antonio Conte's last game in charge, the 3-3 draw with Southampton in the Premier League.

Davies is expected to be sidelined for around five more weeks, while Ryan Sessegnon is still out with a similar injury, leaving Ivan Perisic as the only available option at left wing-back.

Captain Hugo Lloris is set to return from a knee injury after the international break after featuring in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Ipswich last week, but influential midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been lost for the season with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Yves Bissouma is also recovering from surgery on a stress fracture to his ankle.
