Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney announced on Thursday that he is running to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as leader of the ruling Liberal Party. Carney, 59, launched his bid at an event in the western city of Edmonton, casting himself as an outsider who was not part of Trudeau's unpopular government. Labor Department puts spotlight on child labor in slaughterhouses with 3 settlements this week
The problem of kids working in dangerous slaughterhouses continues to be a concern as the Labor Department announced its third agreement this week with a company in the industry agreeing to pay a penalty and reform its practices to help ensure it won't hire underage workers again. On Thursday, the Department said investigators found that another slaughterhouse cleaning company called QSI had employed children at 13 meatpacking plants in eight states on overnight shifts sanitizing the industrial carving machines companies use to produce beef and chicken between 2021 and 2024. This is at least the fourth example of one of these cleaning contractors being caught employing kids in the last two-and-a-half years.

People hospitalized for flu should be tested for bird flu within 24 hours, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday, in an expansion of the agency's efforts to tackle increasing infections in humans. The advisory is intended to prevent delays in identifying human cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) viruses amid high levels of seasonal influenza. The risk to the general public from bird flu is low, and there has been no further evidence of person to person spread, the agency said.
