Updated article published on 29/04/21: Elliot Page has spoken about his transgender identity and how he always knew his true gender.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the 34-year-old actor spoke about his coming out journey.

'All trans people are so different, and my story’s absolutely just my story. But yes, when I was a little kid, absolutely, 100%, I was a boy,' Elliot said. 'I knew I was a boy when I was a toddler. I was writing fake love letters and signing them "Jason." Every little aspect of my life, that is who I was, who I am, and who I knew myself to be.'

'I just couldn’t understand when I’d be told, "No, you’re not. No, you can’t be that when you’re older,"' he continued. 'You feel it. Now I’m finally getting myself back to feeling like who I am, and it’s so beautiful and extraordinary, and there’s a grief to it in a way.'

The star first came out as transgender in December 2020.

Page recently caught up with TV host Oprah Winfrey for another in-depth interview - Page's first televised interview as a trans man - which airs on Apple TV+ on Friday, April 30.

Article original published on 16/03/21: Elliot Page has given his first interview since publicly coming out as transgender.

Gracing the cover of Time magazine, Page spoke honestly and openly about his gender identity, coming out publicly and his commitment to promoting and advancing transgender rights in an interview with the publication.

Page came out as transgender via an Instagram Post on December 1, 2020 announcing that he is trans and that his name is Elliot. Page told Time he felt both excited and grateful to 'have made it to this point in my life' but also fearful and anxious.

Opening up about his own identity and journey, the Umbrella Academy star said he remembers feeling 'like a boy', from the age of nine. 'I wanted to be a boy. I would ask my mum if I could be someday,' he told the magazine.

Page, who rose to prominence in his Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe-nominated role in the Academy Award-winning 2007 movie Juno, explained how his mental health deteriorated in tandem with his rapid rise to fame as he fell into depression and anxiety and experienced panic attacks.

'I just never recognised myself,' said Page explaining that he wasn't able to 'explain to people that even though [I was] an actor, just putting on a T-shirt cut for a woman would make me so unwell'.

Page said that when he came out as gay in 2014 (which included a viral speech at a Human Rights campaign conference) he felt relief, though added: 'But did the discomfort in my body ever go away? No, no, no, no.'

The actor said lockdown and having to isolate on his own due to the pandemic aided his transition as he was forced to confront a lot of the things he was 'unconsciously avoiding'. During this time he also underwent surgery which he noted has 'completely transformed' his life for the better, calling it not just 'life-changing but lifesaving'.

Discussing coming out Page said: 'What I was anticipating was a lot of support and love and a massive amount of hatred and transphobia... That’s essentially what happened.'

The unfortunate transphobic response is something the Inception actor is committed to tackling after coming out, saying he is aware of his own privilege as a wealthy, white and famous person and wants to use it to rally for the trans community and those who don't have a voice.

Page, who is currently filming for the third season of the hit Netflix show The Umbrella Academy in which he plays Vanya, said he is also excited for what the future holds for him when it comes to work, adding: 'I’m really excited to act, now that I’m fully who I am, in this body.'
