Eerie howling after dark to increase around Halloween, NC officials warn. Here’s why

The mysterious sound of creatures howling in the night is expected to increase as Halloween nears this weekend, prompting an unusual alert from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

Wolves are often blamed for baying in the dark, but experts say invasive coyotes will be the source in weeks ahead.

Adding to the creep factor: The wailing could be accompanied by “fiery white” glowing eyes, outdoor websites like Nature Sports Central report.

“Just in time for Halloween, expect to see and hear more coyotes over the coming weeks as young coyotes leave their parents’ territory to establish a home of their own,” the commission said.

“They may wander long distances — upward of 300 miles — before settling down somewhere that’s not already occupied by an established coyote pair. As young coyotes roam, biologists ... experience an increase in reported sightings.”

The young coyotes will often travel in a pack for a time, then split up as they seek out a mate, the state reports. At that point, they start to to “yip, howl and bark” to keep tabs other nearby coyotes, experts say.

Such sounds can be both alarming and a little misleading. the commissions says.

“The hollow tone of their howl and a tendency to vocalize rapidly in a constant stream of sounds can make two coyotes sound like twenty,” officials said.

Coyotes can weigh up to 45 pounds and it has become increasingly common for them to show up in neighborhoods, experts say. Among the dangers: They see “outdoor cats and small unleashed dogs as prey” and have been known to challenge big dogs “during the mating and pup birthing period,” the state says.

“Coyotes are opportunists and their typical standoffish behavior toward people can turn indifferent if they regularly get food near where people live and work, especially if they experience few consequences for hanging around,” the state says.

“Actively scaring off coyotes helps show them where they’re not welcome. ... Throw small objects in their direction, make loud noises, or spray them with a water hose until they retreat and leave the area.”
