Antonio Rudiger has become the latest player to announce their disbelief at Edouard Mendy being snubbed for the Ballon d’Or.

The Chelsea goalkeeper came to his team’s rescue several times on Saturday night to help earn a 1-0 win at Brentford, in just the latest moment of a memorable year.

Mendy also became the first African keeper to win the Champions League in May and has received backing from the likes of Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly after missing out on a Ballon d’Or nomination.

Following the Blues’ win, which returned them to the top of the Premier League table, injured defender Rudiger tweeted his reaction.

He wrote: “Someone explain why he’s not nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

“What a performance... EDOUARD MENDY.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel hopes Mendy will not be disheartened by his absence from the 30-man shortlist, which does include Blues stars Mason Mount, Jorginho, Cesar Azpilicueta and N’Golo Kante - plus Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Tuchel stated: “I hope it does not bother him, because it does not bother me too much. He's not too influenced by that.

“I think we could be on that list as a whole team, we won that competition as a team.

“If we have five names or six names it doesn't matter. We won the Champions League with 21, 23 guys, everybody played their role.

“Today we relied on him heavily again today, he's the guy who performs so well for us and that we're so happy for. So everything is good.”
