Edison wins GMAC flag football title; Gulliver and Ransom win district lacrosse titles

The Edison girls’ flag football team defeated Krop 25-6 to win the GMAC title in the Gold Bracket (top four seeds).

Krop was the runner-up, and Ferguson beat Miami Central for third place.

In the finals, Edison quarterback Lonesha Howell had two touchdown runs and threw a touchdown pass to Carol Cadet, and sophomore Alexandria Harris caught a pass covering 60 yards and intercepted a pass.

Samarra Howard later sealed the win on a 45-yard touchdown run. The defense was led by Sarley Joseph and Howard with 15 flag pulls. Cadet also intercepted a pass.

The champs are: Mykyra Joseph, Alexandria Harris, Jackie Brown, Natalie Sanders, Rilya Pharr, Samarra Howard, Sarley Joseph, Kaliya Charles, Lonesha Howell, Ronisha Gibbs, Abigail Bailey, Carol Cadet, Inaru Barbon, and Wadline Bruno. The coaches are Vince Hall (head coach), Ken Simmons (offensive coordinator), Mikey Sheehan (defensive coordinator) and Terrence Fisher.

For Krop, Lindsey Weingard was 14 for 24 for 109 yards and a touchdown, had a 15-yard run and on defense made 10 flag pulls. Mai Lisa Atis caught seven passes for 65 yards and had two runs for nine yards and totaled four flag pulls.

Emmy Mills made two receptions for 16 yards and a touchdown and recorded four flag pulls. Brooke Couri caught five passes for 26 yards and made a sack. Aliona Chapel had two flag pulls and Jada Pitts one flag pull.

In the semifinals, top seeded Edison defeated fourth seeded Central 6-0, and second seeded Krop defeated third seeded Ferguson 14-12.

In the Silver Bracket finals, Miami High beat Jackson 26-19 in overtime.

Teams competing included American, ATM, Barbara Goleman, Braddock, Carol City, Miami Central, Coral Park, Coral Reef, Edison, Ferguson, Homestead, Jackson, JC Bermudez, Killian, Krop, Miami Beach, Miami High, Norland, North Miami, Northwestern, South Miami, Southridge, Southwest, TERRA, Varela.

MaxPreps ranked Edison second and Krop third among teams in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Western is ranked first and Pembroke Pines-Somerset fourth. Ferguson is fifth and Central seventh. Western is ranked first in the state and Edison fifth.

District tournaments are this week.

Wrestling Honor

Joe Blasucci of Somerset Academy was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Boys’ Wrestling Coach of the Year, after leading his squad to the Class 1A state team title, the first in school history.

Earlier in the season, the Panthers also captured the Class 1A state dual meet championship.

Blasucci, the Florida Dairy Farmers Boys’ Wrestling 1A Coach of the Year, won the overall coaching honor over Class 2A Coach of the Year Evan Robinson of Charlotte and Class 3A Coach of the Year Victor Balmeceda of South Dade.

Lacrosse district titles

Gulliver Prep won a district title in boys’ lacrosse. The Raiders face Belen Jesuit in a region semifinal on Friday.
