Eddie Murphy addresses potential Donkey return for Shrek 5

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish spoilers follow.

Eddie Murphy has given the green light to any potential return to his Shrek character Donkey, saying that he is absolutely "ready" to revisit the character.

Murphy, who played Donkey in four Shrek movies, was speaking to Etalk about the spin-off movie Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which stars Antonio Banderas as the titular character first introduced in Shrek 2.

Murphy said that he is ready for his own spin-off movie as Donkey and would also do another Shrek movie — which would the fifth instalment in the franchise — should Dreamworks want to.

"I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey," Murphy said.

"You know, they did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, 'They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.'"

Murphy continued: "I would do a Donkey movie. I would do another Shrek in two seconds."

The reporter suggested that Murphy might have to "pull some strings" in order to get a Donkey spin-off movie going, but Murphy said that any such plans are entirely down to Dreamworks Animation.

"They have to want to do it. Dreamworks, if you all want to do it, just call me. I’m ready, I’m sitting and ready to do Donkey," Murphy said.

While no fifth Shrek movie has been announced, the possibility of such a film was hinted at during Puss in Boots: The Last Wish when Shrek was briefly seen in a dialogue-free scene before the film ended with Puss saying he wanted to go and see some "old friends."

Far Far Away was seen in the distance.

There has been little movement as of yet, but screenwriter Michael McCullers said in 2017 that he has finished the script. Meanwhile, Banderas told Deadline that there will likely be a further Puss in Boots film plus a new Shrek installment. Watch this animated space.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is out now in US cinemas. It will be released in UK cinemas on February 2, 2023.
