EastEnders fans have been left “devastated” following the death of one of its most popular characters.

Viewers of the BBC soap were surprised by the events of Monday night’s episode (19 April) after serial killer Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) struck again.

This time, it ended badly for EastEnders favourite Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami), who met a grisly end after being pushed in front of a moving tube.

The dramatic scenes came after Kush, who was facing prison time for a crime committed by the Mitchells, prepared to run away from Albert Square with Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty).

However, Gray put a stop to this after being threatened by Phil (Steve McFadden). At the train station, after he had one final heart-to-heart with Whitney, Kush had a scuffle with Gray, with the pair falling onto the tracks.

Kush climbs to safety and, spotting an oncoming train, holds his hand out for Gray, who accepts. When Gray is safe, he pushes Kush back onto the tracks.

Viewers couldn’t believe their eyes, and berated the writers for letting the character go in such a gruesome manner.

“Kush got done dirty on EastEnders,” one fan wrote, with another writing: “A list of exits better than tonight’s would be too long to tweet. But no, it’s ‘Gray strikes again’ not only is it silly now, but what a sad/undeserved exit for #Kush, ending a 7 year role like that just for a ‘killing spree’ storyline and pure shock value? Nope”

Others praised Ghadami for his work on the soap.

“You will be so so SO missed Davood! One of my favourite male characters ever, you’ve been just outstanding and i’m so sad we’ll never get you back,” one fan wrote.

Another added: “Never did I believe this exit would happen. We love you pls come back. Incredible scenes tonight what a heartbreaking exit. It’s been a real pleasure watching you on screen.”

Walford Weekly Podcast wrote to Ghadami on Twitter: ”I hope you are seeing all the love for you and Kush online tonight. Such a sad ending for a fantastic character and you never put in one poor performance. You will be hugely missed.”

The character first appeared in the series in 2014. Ghadami will next be seen in Holby City.

Addressing his departure from the soap, Ghadami admitted “it’s hard to say goodbye”, and hailed Kush as the”best mate I’ve ever had”.
