EastEnders' Jamie Borthwick leads cast birthday tribute to Tony Clay

EastEnders actor Jamie Borthwick has led the cast in birthday tributes to co-star Tony Clay.

Borthwick posted a story to his Instagram yesterday (August 8) from the set of the soap to congratulate his castmate on turning 31.

In the video, Borthwick, who plays Jay Brown in the BBC series, can be heard from behind the camera joking about Clay's age. "How old are you now? 43? 44?" he quipped.

The Callum Highway actor then claps back to let everyone know it is actually his 31st birthday and says: "Life starts again, or something like that!"

"Well happy birthday, Tony, love you," says Jamie in the touching tribute. He is joined by fellow EastEnders actors James Farrar and Danielle Harold in their congratulations.

"Thank you, thanks Jamie's followers, thanks everyone," a happy Clay says to the camera.

Clay recently spoke about his on-screen husband Ben Mitchell's male rape storyline on the soap, saying it's "important" to tell these stories.

"I think it's something that the older soaps have covered in some sort of way," he said. "It's so important to keep stories like this prevalent and on people's minds, because it's something that happens more often than people think.

"I think it's something that, when done well, can be really hard-hitting and thought-provoking and get a conversation going. Ultimately, that's our job. I think that's the job of all shows, really, and for us as actors, it's so important. That's what we sign up to do: to tell important stories.

"I think Max [Bowden] and Aidan [O'Callaghan, who plays Lewis] and everyone involved in this story will really handle certain trust and respect and I think they will do it really brilliantly," Tony added.

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
